Debate Topic:

Should the medical profession force feed anorexics as part of their treatment? Do anorexics have the right to refuse to eat?

Anorexia is an illness of the mind. And to get the mind to cure we have to have the body to function properly therefore they should be make to eat. It is understandable that it is human right to choose if you eat or drink but it has been made against the law to pull the plug on someone even if they want to die and they are also forced to take the treatment to keep them alive. In a way this fits in with anorexia because eventually without the right help they will die. When I was younger my mother was anorexic her approximate intake a day was an apple. It not only makes the person suffer but the family around them.
The person should not be forced to eat huge meals at a time just small quantities that then will amount to a proper meal. There are also camps now where anorexic children go but they only try to change their state of mind. If it became desperately ill and they were going to die from lack of food don’t you agree that it is only right to try and preserve their life? They are blinded by their illness to see what they have become that they have become a skeleton.
It has also now be made illegal that anorexic people should be force fed. Therefore it shows that professionals and the government have taken the time to think this through. The pros for allowing this to become real over rule the cons by miles. Approximately 30 people are tube fed already without this law being past. It has also had doctors sued for money as their parents wished this not to happen. But isn’t that being in fair. If their child got some other mental illness or their state of mind slipped the majority of parents would want the best of help for them. Special schools etc to help them lead a normal life. Without eating their life will be far from normal. There is now special places where they can go to help change their state of mind.
One reason why so many people suffer from anorexia is because of the way models are made to be. Their skinny image and lack of eating is what the anorexic people want to be like. These models some times also need to be force fed.
This law was also passed so that the doctors can know what to do, they are trying to save someone’s life. Even if the person hates them at the time for making them eat when their state of mind is correct without a doubt they will be thank full that their lives have been saved.

Against Force Feeding

Even though the consequences of anorexia are mostly physical the cause is mostly mental. There's no point in force feeding without treating the mental part. You can keep force feeding but the person will always keep going back to their old habiits if the illness is not mentally erradicated.

Force feeding can have more traumatic damages than advantages. Ther person is already so 'in another reality' that force feeding can lead to desperation and suicide.
