The Riddles of the Sphinx

Every so often, the sphinx will present you with a riddle to be solved. If you think you can work it out, PM me (duck the duck) with the subject “sphinx riddles”.

There is a 40 point opening for the first person who PM's me with the correct answer and a 20 point opening for all others who get it right.

The answer to the riddle will be a magical creature, and the riddle is in the format of a ‘rhyming riddle’, each line of the riddle describes individual letters of the solution. As an example:

My first is in tea but not in leaf,
My second is in teapot and also in teeth,
My third is in caddy but not in cosy
My fourth is in cup but not in rosy
My fifth is in herbal and also in health
My sixth is in peppermint and always in wealth
My last is in drink, so what can I be?

Here, the answer is TEACHER.

So can you work out the magical creature in the following riddle?

Riddle #1:

Riddle-me-rhyme, riddle-me-ree,
Solve this riddle, and you shall see.
My first is in Hogwarts, though never in book,
My second in ship, though not in its hook.
My third and fourth, the same letter true,
Can be found in an apple, where there are two.
My fifth is round and ground and bound to confuse,
Though the point of this is not to bemuse.
My sixth and seventh in grin and green,
Look hard enough and they can be seen.
The third from last can be found in itself,
The ninth and tenth in the word elf.
Can you work out my hidden name?
