| June bit her lip and smoothed her sweaty hands on her jeans. She took in deep breaths, trying to relax... but it wasn't working!! She placed a hand at her heart and closed her eyes, trying to focus on the ocean... the usually worked. But today, it wasn't working as well as it should. It was almost time... almost time for her performance. June turned to quadruple-check her outfit in the full-length mirror backstage. She wore fashionable jeans and a traditional Chinese-style shirt, paired with silver high-heels. She wore no rings or bracelets because they'd get in the way of her painting, but she was wearing a pair of gorgeous silver earrings. June looked fine, not a hair out of place. To everyone, she appeared calm, cool, and collected... if only she could actually feel that way. Someone tapped her on the shoulder and June spun around, tense, but relaxed a little when she saw that it was only Aliza. "H-hey," she said nervously, realizing what her mentor's appearance meant. Aliza smiled reassuringly and said, "It's time... I'm sure you'll do fine." June shakily nodded and smiled back, though it was a bit more like a grimace. Without a word, she turned and peeked through a crack in the black stage curtains at the stage. It was almost empty, the floor a soothing light-colored wood. In the middle of the stage stood a long wooden table that had been set up. On the table, sat a number of paints, pencils, erasers, brushes, a palette, and paper. And of course, the ever-necessary glass of water, to wash the brushes. June clenched her hand tightly into a fist, her nails digging little crescents into her palm. Here goes nothing... June stepped out into the bright lights and smiled confidently, expressing the very emotion that she wished she could feel. | Click... click... click... Every tap of her silver shoes against the waxed wooden floor was a stab through her heart and through her confidence. June took in a deep breath, held it, and let it out slowly. Eek... not helping!!! She focused on the table that was her destination and tried not to let the sound of her shoes unnerve her more than she was already... But... it was echoing. Halfway to the table set with her paints, brushes, water, paper, pencils, erasers, and palettes, June suddenly realized that her music wasn't playing. Where IS it?!?!?! She could feel each pulse of her heart getting faster and faster as the familiar sense of panic began to infiltrate her veins. Her thoughts sped through her mind in blurs and June tried to think of something else. It'll come... sometime... please... She took in a deep breath, held it, but this time she didn't let it out. The lack of oxygen somehow helped her to concentrate on not tripping in her shoes and now, she was almost there, almost to her table, her safety, her saviour. Suddenly, June's heart skipped a beat as the familiar strains of Chinese music reached her ears. She'd opted to play modern music instead of traditional music. After all, the theme of her act was blending modern with traditional. June let out the breath she'd been holding as the music filled the room. Better late than never June smiled and felt happier. Maybe things wouldn't be so bad after all. She reached the table, pulled out the comfy silver chair there, and sat down, facing the audience. She felt more than saw a projector turning on that focused on the paper in front of her. The audience would be able to see the process through which she painted, in addition to the end result itself. She surreptitiously wiped her sweaty hands on the table and picked up a pencil. She already had the image she wanted to paint in mind... now she only had to actually paint it. J une bit her lip and hesitatingly began to draw. First were the lines, the strokes that basically shaped the entire image. Small lines, long ones for branches... And here.... curves for the petals. They didn't all have to be proportionate, but relatively so. June suddenly stopped and dug her free hand into her jeans. Crap! She put down her pencil, grabbed an eraser, and gently began to slowly rub the rubber across her paper, not wanting the rice paper to tear. She had made one of the flowers too large. Compared to the others, the flower seemed as if it had taken steroids... and that was not what she wanted the picture to come across as. June finished her erasing and resumed her drawing. Now: on to the feathers. She bit her lip as she began making little ^ marks, marking out the numerous feathers on the bird. They had to be very light so that when they were painted over, the paint wouldn't smudge to look as if the bird had gigantic pinfeathers. June continued drawing for a while until she sat back, breathed a great breath of relief, and put down her pencil. Now on to the painting. Playlist: Tropical Rain Forest Super Star I.O.I.O. | June poured some black ink onto the palette and picked up her smallest brush. She dipped it into the ink and slowly, painstakingly, began to paint over the pencil lines she had previously drawn in. It didn't take very long because the base was already there, and she had only to follow it. After that was done, June picked up a medium-sized brush, squeezed out some light brown paint, and put a bit on the brush. She added a drop of water to make the paint lighter and began to paint using long strokes. After she had finished, June picked up the tiny brush with black, and made little dots along the sides of the brown. There: the trunk and branches were done.
As time ticked by, June painted everything in color, occasionally making small mistakes under pressure, but overall, she was doing fine. When she was almost finished, June raised her brush to put one more stroke of color on the bird's wing when, to her dismay, a large drop of inky-watery-black ink fell from the tip of the brush right onto the paper! She pounded her hand against the table at her stupidity, glad that the ongoing music kept everyone from noticing the loud sound that her frustration had caused. June quickly dropped her brush on the padded paper towel and picked up a rectangular-shaped rubber thing with one side that slid down like a ramp. This was only used in emergencies, such as this one. June slid the thin edge of the ramp carefully along the rice paper; she didn't want to tear it. As she slid the rubber thing on and off the paper, she pooled ink slid up the ramp. Eventually, June got the ink off the paper, though it looked slightly as if a bomb had hit.
Oh well.... June put everything down, stood up, and walked to the front of the stage. She cleared her throat and said, "Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your patience during this act. Here is the finished product." A projector showed the finished painting up on the board. June smiled and said, "Have a great day, and please look in on all the other fabulous talents currently taking place." She gave a quick little bow and walked off the stage. She'd return to clean everything up later. As she practically flew onto backstage, June sighed in total relief. It was over. | |
