(10 points to Rigby Dumbledore for suggesting this class)

Harry Potter is finally over. Throughout the books we saw many DADA Teachers, some more flawed than others.

For this Class I want you to compare and contrast the 6th DADA Teachers Harry Potter had. What were their flaws? Their assets? Were they good or bad DADA Professors?

Then to finalize your essay I want you to gather several aspects of each Professor and put it all in one person that'd make for you the perfect DADA teacher.

You're required a minimum of 300 words but I strongly adivse more. You can win up to 100 points.

The best student
will get an award point plus their name in the Hall of Fame and the
house with most students taking part will get 100 points at the end of
every term.

Your DADA Professor,
Raistlin The Wizard

Through out the years at Hogwarts there have been many defence against the dark arts teachers, Proffesor Quirriel(sp), Professor Lockheart, Professor Lupin, Professor Moody, Professor Umbridge and Professor Snape Each of these professors had their own idividual way of teaching things.

Professor Quirriel, was a cleaver man one who had been teaching at Hogwarts for some time until he stumbled upon voldemort, foolesh and greedy he helped the dark lord. Professor Quirriel was an experienced man with his work, and quite a good teacher up until Harry Potter came to Hogwarts as of that time he was sharing his body with the spirit of lord voldemort. I feel that this greed is the main flaw of Professor Quirriel and that if he had not done that the professor would have probably contunied to teach at Hogwarts throught the schooling year, forgetting of course that their is a curse.

Professor Lockheart, a fake self-obsessed man. Professor Lockheart was perhaps the worst teacher that ever taught Defence against the dark arts, as in fact he did not have a clue of how to defend himself except how to hide underneath a table perhaps. He had the students do pop quizzes on him and did not stick to any form of criculem. Professor Lockheart should have never been hired in this position but at the time he was beileved to be a great and talented wizard who had defeated many creatures and saved many lives. Although Professor Lockheart was a no good fake he did bring light and warmth to the school especially on valentines day where he had the hall decorated in special colors for the occasion.

Professor Lupin, was perhaps the best teacher that taught at Hogwarts during the time of Harry's schooling. He stuck to a certain structure and saw many people through exams, it is perhaps Professor Lupin's in put and Harry's teacher that got many people throught their Defence against the dark arts exams. The professor was kind and fair yet firm with all the students. He even got Neville Longbottem who had been bottem of the class for the past two years to perform to an acceptable standard which would have been quite and achievement. And many students and teachers were sad to see him go. Although Professor Lupin was a great asset to the teacher at Hogwarts he was a werewolf and therefore once every month he had to leave his class to another teacher, this would mess up the whole teachering system as there would have to be a pernement supply teacher for his subject.

Professor Moody, or should I say Barty Crouch Jr was a death eater and therefore should never have been allowed to be a teacher at Hogwarts. His motives for going there were not to teach but to track down Harry and make sure he was handed to voldemort at the correct time. Although he was a death eater he was seen as quite a good teacher although he taught them of unforgivable curses and anything ghoolish, he prepaired them for what is really out there which the subject is all about. Most of what he did was an act as he was pretending to be Professor Moody and had to act like he would so as not to blow his cover. He although it was not his phrase taught the children of 'constant vilgance'(sp)

Professor Umbridge, was an evil meglomanic with a scary way of making you write lines by writing with you own blood. This evil women wanted to take over control of Hogwarts and have all the students at her command. She manipulated and used fear to get her own way and with the power coming from Fudge the minister she was able to carry out these tasks. At one point she did indeed become headmisters. I think Umbridges example would be how not to teach. On the other hand she would be an excellent way into the minesty if you wished to work there in the future and all you would have to do would be to stay on here good side. Her methods of teachings were theory, if you learn the theory then you can do the practical which is pretty much a useless way of teaching as you need to know both the theory and the pratical.

Professor Snape, adored the lesson of defence against the dark arts and had aspired to have this teaching post for years. Know for his hate of all students except Slytherin I feel that Professor Snape was not the worst teacher. Though strict and harsh he taught all the students what they needed to know and many of them learnt how to do silent spells etc. Professor Snape was a hard and cruel man yet he would have gotten them all through their NEWTs just fine as he would have done with potions. He could be said to be a prefectionist but then he would get you to perform the spells perfectly. His draw back was that students feared him and could never ask for help or voice their opinions in his lessons.

Overall I feel that Professor Lupin was the best defence against the dark arts teacher that saw Hogwarts in that particular time space.

PostSubject: Re: DADA Role Model   DADA Role Model EmptyFri Dec 14 2007, 11:39

As we go through Harry's life in Hogwarts we see that there have been different DADA professors every year. It is said that they can't survive a whole year because of the curse Voldemort made on the job when he was rejected for it. All of the teachers have been quite interesting. And all of them have a different story.

DADA Role Model 200px-Quirrell-ps
First off we see Professor Quirinus Quirrell in Harry's first year. Described to have a "brilliant mind", and was a fine teacher while studying from books. Before Harry's arrival at Hogwarts, he took a year off to get some first-hand experience. Upon his return, he appeared perpetually nervous and had developed a stutter and nervous tics. He wore a turban which he used to hide Voldemort at the back of his head. J.K.Rowling first said that he used to be teacher of Muggle Studies at Hogwarts but took the DADA position in Harry's first year. His biggest flaw was to fall under the spell of Voldemort. I believe he would have stayed a wonderful teacher if it wasn't for his agreement to help Voldemort. At the end we see he dies when he battles with Harry to try and get The Sorcerer's Stone.

DADA Role Model 200px-Lockhartcos
Next year we meet Professor Gilderoy Lockhart. He is a writer who is obsessed with himself. His books talk about his adventures encountering dark creatures and how he defeats them all. In his lessons he talks a lot about himself without really teaching them useful things. And that is his biggest flaw. He talks to much about himself that he forgets he has a class to teach so students won't learn much, except for stuff about him. We also find out that he is a fraud and has never performed a magic trick and of course his books are fake. Because he tells this to Harry and Ron he tries to use a memory charm on them but the spell backfires and hits him sending him to St.Mungo's Hospital for loosing his memory and going mad.

DADA Role Model 200lupin
Then we meet Professor Remus Lupin. My favorite of all DADA Role Model 436937 He befriends Harry because of the friendship he used to have with his father James. His students loved his way of teaching which was always hands-on. Harry grows to love him as well, since he is a lot of help to Harry. He teaches him the famous Patronus Charm and a lot about his father's past. His biggest flaw is that by an accident he was turned into a werewolf. When this time comes he completely forgets everything even his own name meaning he can attack anyone, even his own students. He eventually has to leave as well because he can't teach as a werewolf. And parents wouldn't want their children to be taught by a werewolf also.

DADA Role Model 220px-Gleesonmoodyclassroom
In fourth year we meet Professor Alastor Moody. Or his impostor anyway. Barty Crouch Jr., a famous deatheather captured Moody and hid him in a trunk while using Polyjuice Potion he faked to be him. Alastor Moody would have been a great teacher because he's an Auror. If he had taught at Hogwarts he would have been really good. Knowing so much about how to defend himself and capturing dark wizards he would have taught the kids some useful stuff. Too bad he never got the chance to teach.

DADA Role Model 200px-Ootp002
Fifth year we meet the worst nightmare. Professor Dolores Jane Umbridge. Her original job was at the Ministry working with Fudge which is like God in her eyes. She goes there trying to change everything at Hogwarts. Starting by the teaching methods in DADA. She has them write lines in all of her classes and prohibiting the use of wands in her classroom. They learn lots of theory but no practice. Her methods of punishment are cruel and pathetic. Then she starts creating all the Decrees which are new rules changing everything at Hogwarts. At the end of the book she is captured by centaurs and they take her away making her quit her job.

DADA Role Model 200px-Ootp076
Last but not least Professor Snape finally gets his dream job. He had wanted the DADA post for ages and was always jealous of the ones who teached it. I believe since he loved the subject so much he is a good teacher for it. He is really smart in creating defensive spells and their counterjinxes. We can see in the Potions book Harry owned that you can find many things there. So Snape was really smart. I believe his flaws would be the love he has for only Slytherin students and not giving the rest of them a chance to succeed.

To make the perfect DADA professor I would take Quirell's ability to study a lot form books in order to prepare his classes, after all that made him a wonderful teacher. From Lockhart I would take his imagination. Even if he used for bad things and fake ones the students could learn how to use their imagination for better stuff. Like creating or combining defensive spells. From Lupin I would take his methods of teaching. He made the students learn a little theory but at the same time practice it and manage to do it. From Moody I would take his bravery and courage, he could teach the students to be sure of themselves and brave also everytime they performed a spell. From Umbridge I would take her love for theory. What's the use of knowing how to do the spells if you don't know their theory? Like their counterjinxes and stuff like that. And from Snape I would take his love for DADA. He could teach students how to like the subject and like what they are doing. That way they are excited to learn more and it can help them defend themselves. DADA Role Model 436937

PostSubject: Re: DADA Role Model   DADA Role Model EmptyTue Dec 25 2007, 16:51

One thing I can say about the Defense Against the Dark Arts classes is, I’m glad I didn’t take any in Harry Potter’s time. I don’t think I could have handled the instability of having a new teacher every year. In fact, I really think that were it not for Harry, not many people would have done very well on their owls. However, each professor did lend their own unique styles, and some of the aspects of each of these teachers were quite good. Some, naturally, were not very optimal.

Let’s start from the beginning. In Harry’s first year, he studies the subject under Professor Quirrel. We do not know much about his teaching methods, because we don’t encounter him in class very often. My understanding of it is that he was quite a well-informed teacher. However, his classes had become something of a joke by the time Harry came along. There was, however, the slight problem of the fact that he was in the dark lord’s service the whole time and was even transporting his essence. I have a feeling he was once a good instructor, but had gone just a tiny bit corrupt.

Moving along to Harry’s second year we are introduced to Gilderoy Lockheart. Although he is one of my favorite characters, I have to admit he is one of the worst teachers not only in Hogwarts, but possibly in imagination. There is very little I can say good about him. Perhaps the best thing I can say is that he wanted people to be happy. He attempted, however disgustingly, to bring a little love into the school on Valentine’s Day. He also attempted to bridge gaps between people who wouldn’t typically get along. Of course, that may have been due to an unfortunate obliviousness to others’ feelings. However, his arrogance was annoying at best and his willingness to deceive the wizarding world just to become famous is inexcusable.

Remus Lupin came along in Harry’s third year. Most would say that he was the best teacher, and I must say, I quite agree. He brought to the class many methods that were rather impressive. He made D.A.D.A. fun by bringing in fascinating creatures, taking a hands-on approach to the study, and making obstacle courses instead of more traditional examination methods. He did have his faults, though. The fact that he was unwilling to tell Dumbledore about Sirius animagus capabilities, while understandable, was not very responsible. Also, although there’s no direct evidence, he seems to be a little more laid-back than he should be. Well, except to Harry, of course. But, I think that has more to do with his friendship with Harry’s parents than his relationship with Harry as his teacher. However, his willingness to admit his mistakes is a greatly redeeming quality.

In Harry’s fourth year, he thinks he meets Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody. However, as we all know, the person teaching the children was actually Bartemius Crouch Jr. I’m not sure how much of the teaching style was an imitation of Moody and how much was Barty’s personality shining through. Regardless, I feel he was, for the most part, a skillful teacher. His willingness to demonstrate and even use unforgivable curses on students may have been unwise; nonetheless, one cannot deny that it was helpful. Harry even uses the ability a death eater taught him to resist the Imperius curse Voldemort intended to put on him. I have a feeling that, had he gotten the opportunity, Mad-Eye would have made a wonderful teacher.

Along comes Harry’s fifth year, and with it, the largest demonstration of the corruption that has developed in the ministry. The students have one of the most evil women imaginable thrown at them as a teacher, in what is arguably their most crucial year. Delores Umbridge has very little to her that I would consider qualities of a good teacher. I do feel, however, that the students did need to go back to the basics. Even Harry agreed once he realized how feel people could actually pull off a decent shield charm. Her tendency toward cruelty, her many bigotries toward “half-breeds”, and her unhealthy obsession with Fudge, made her a horrendous teacher.

The final teacher Harry had was one who was not good for him, but one that I would have probably wanted. While I didn’t approve of Professor Snape’s tendency to be biased against anyone student not in Slytherin, I think he was an amazing teacher for someone who had a natural inclination to the subject. He exhibited a passion for the subject that I think could have inspired even the laziest of students. He also commanded respect with ease. However, he was far too much of a bully to be a truly good teacher. His methods were extremely unfair, and that injustice is something no teacher should have.

If I were to invent my ideal teacher, I would start with Quirrel’s ability to understand his subject. From there I would combine Lockheart’s jovial spirit and add Professor Lupin’s creativity to the mix. I would throw in a pinch of Moody/Crouch’s audacity and willingness to introduce non-traditional topics, and a dash of Umbridge’s love of theory. Then I would blend that all together with a healthy dollop of Snape’s enthusiasm for the subject. That, I think, would create an excellent teacher who would be able to instruct nearly any willing pupil.

PostSubject: Re: DADA Role Model   DADA Role Model EmptyThu Dec 27 2007, 18:47

Professor Quill was the one teacher that we didn’t learn too much about how he taugha nd how much he taught. Before Voldemort had taken resiadent in the back of his head, Quill liked to travel which shows that he liked to learn by experiment which would then make him able to teach by telling the students about his encounters with the many creatures that he met. One bad thing about him though is the fact that he had let Voldemort share his body with him and then agreed to kill unicorns so that he could drink their blood. Here he is helping out a Dark wizard and also he is killing a pure animal.

Professor Lockhart was a wizard who loved to let others that he was famous, a quality that wasn’t a good one for him. He would sign fan mail at the school and even had Harry help him with it. It would have had been too bad if he didn’t use a memory charm and make others think that he did one thing when someone else did it. One good trait would have to be that he did answer his fan letters….

Professor Lupin was by far the best teacher they had at Hogwarts. He knew what he was teaching and he also had the students practice what they had learned. He made learning fun and you do this then learning the material will be quite easy to do. Unfortunately he turned out to be a werewolf. A creature that is considered a Dark creature and he had to leave the school before any of the students mothers had gone and written a letter to the headmaster about him teaching there. The students loved him and he loved the students.

Professor Moody would have had been a great teacher if he was able to teach there. Throughout the book it was an imposter pretending to be him by what we saw he did do a good job. His lessons sounded like they went well except for that time he showed the students the unforgivable curses which he should of not but if it was the real Moody I doubt that he would have had done such a thing. They only downside to him being a teacher would be the fact that he lacks a sense of humor. Most of the time he tries to act serious and takes things too far which makes him seem like he is crazy even when is isn’t.

Professor Umbridge was by far the worse teacher they had. She was even worse than Lockheart. She tried to rule the school and even though she thought that she had she couldn’t. The students all hated her and did the opposite of what she had told them to do. They didn’t listen to one word that she had to say to them. The only good thing about her was her appearance. She seemed like a nice old lady even though she was the complete opposite.

Professor Snape was a good teacher even thought all of the students hated him. They only hated him because of they way he acted towards them. The only people who liked him was Slytehrin because he was only nice to them. He did know a lot about the Dark Arts and spent most of his live learning as much as he could about it. He would have had been a great teacher if only he was nicer to the students that weren’t in his house.

For the ultimate Defense Against the Dark Arts Teacher they would have to know a lot about the Dark Arts. If you do not know this much then you won’t be a very good teacher. You will not know the material or how to teach it even. Going on travels like Quill did would be best because you will learn about it first hand. Also they would need to be kind to all of their students and take their time to get to know them. Everyone learns a different way and if you egt to know the students then you will be able to learn how they would be able to learn and with this knowledge you can change your lessons plans to fit this helping the students to learn better. The teacher will also have to have the students practice their spells so that they then will be able to know how to use any spells so the teacher might have an assignment in class that requires the student to use these spells. The teacher must know what to teach and what not to teach and they must have a sense of humor because they will be stuck in a room with a student for many minutes. They must also not try to rule the school and if the teacher looks and acts nice and kind then the students will not disobey their teacher every minute they have that chance. One last thing that a teacher must do is be nice to all of their students. If you don’t want to make two thirds of the students in the school hate you. They might get together and end up giving you a hard time. Be nice to them and they will be nice back. That is some of the qualities a teacher should have.

DADA Role Model Empty
PostSubject: Re: DADA Role Model   DADA Role Model EmptyThu Dec 27 2007, 22:39

First Year
We are first introduced to Professor Quirell. He was an exceptionally brilliant teacher and taught students well, but prior to Harry's arrival at Hogwarts he took a few years off and took a trip to Albania and upon his return, he was extremely nervous and fearful, developing quite a stutter whenever he spoke. It was during that trip that Professor Quirell encountered the disembodied Lord Voldemort, who lived within his body and was cleverly hidden behind a wrapped turban. I believe he might have been a grand professor, but upon his arrival he became more soft spoken and was literally scared of his own students. His once clever and sharp mind became short circutied once Voldemort had enbodied him.

Second Year
Professor Lockheart. He was a so called "self acclaimed" adventurer who published his own line of books that led to his fame and wealth. Although many thought of him as handsome and brave and charming - mostly witches. He was a man who took pride in his accomplishments and saw to it that everyone knew of him. When I think of Lockheart only one word comes to mind. Conceited. Not a very good character trait for one to teach one of the most important classes in Hogwarts. I don't think any of his lessons were of any valuable to the students. I only give him slight credit in the fact that he persuaded Harry and Ron, in a way to go down into the Chamber of Secrets. Yet, his plan backfired on him as Harry himself became the savior and he was landed in St.Mungo's with a serious case of amnesia.

Third Year
In my opinion I would say Professor Lupin was by far the best teacher. His spectacular 'hands on' lessons pulled in the students interests. He brought in a mix of fun and excitment into the classroom and despite that he had the affections of his pupils, it was evident that he was more of a friend to his students than a teacher. Not only did that put himself in a more complicated position, but his priorities as a teacher were a concern. He wasn't only that either, Lupin was in fact a creature of the full moon. A werewolf. This problem affected his work as he would be out each month for a few days, which raised numerious questions by both co workers and students alike. In the end this man gave up the DADA position to a worthier persion.

Fourth Year
Up comes Harrys fourth year and we are introduced to Professor Moody, who really isn't who he says he is. In reality it was Bary Crouch Jr. who disguised himself as the ex-auror by using polyjuice potion to infiltrate Hogwarts during the Triwizard tournament. Why? Harry Potter, of course. Despite all that, I have to admit that 'Moody' had an excellent method of teaching. It was a mixture of practical and theoretical. He demonstrated vital information that the students would need to know such as the inforgivable curses and put them to use. Even though he was rather rough and ragged around the edges and a little less than teacher material, I would say that his knowledge would have been useful for future students.

Fifth Year
This year, was the most important as OWLs were an essential exam needed to pass onto the next year. Unfortunatly, a dispicable woman by the name of Dolores Umbridge acclaimed the DADA teaching position. She immediately became the worst nightmare imaginable - thinking up unexcuseable punishments, creating numerious numbers of decrees (rules) in which the studetns must follow and banishing Dumbledore as headmaster in which she stepped in to take his place. She still stayed as the DADA professor, but I think some of her methods were reasonable. Theory brings practical was one of them, but I don't think not practing the practical part of the lesson was a mistake.

Sixth Year
Professor Snape was finally deemed DADA teacher, his most desired position. I believe that Snape was passionate about this subject as he did a rather good job in his lessons. I have to say that Snape had an excellet rhythm when it came to the classroom. He was strict and tactful. Through his skills, he taught what the students needed to know without any complications and was respected by fear. His favoritism to Slytherin was not hidden amongst the dungeon in which the class took place, but it did make him one of the reasons why he's not as good as a teacher as he should be.

A perfect teacher. Hmm. That's a hard one, but if I had to choose from each. I would say Quirrell's cleverness, I truly believe before he was embodied by Voldemort that he was once a phenomal and bright professor. From Lockhart, I extract his pride. A rather silly characteristic to include, but what's use of a teacher who doesn't take pride in their students and themeselves? Lupin's affections for his students is something I add to the mix. Although there is a fine line between being a teacher and being a friend to a student, I think a teacher earns more respect if he/she knows a little about the student. Now from Moody, I would take his determination. It is what drives a teacher to do with they do and pass it onto their pupils. Umbridge, I wouldn't take anything else, but her thirst for theory. As I said, she was right when she said theory bring in practical. As for Snape, I would no doubt abduct his passion for the DADA subject. He longed for the position for so long and you could tell by the way that he taught, that he was spirited about his lessons.

So there you have it, those a few of the essential qualities I think a teacher should have.

”Canaries in a Coal Mine”

A Year-by-Year Biography of the Defense Against the Dark Arts Teachers of Hogwarts

Professor Quirinus Quirrell

The first Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher we met, Quirrell appeared to be a nervous, stuttering man, but this was revealed as an act. In reality, he was cold and calculating, and attracted by power that was offered to him by Lord Voldemort. Hagrid, did, however, describe him as having a “brilliant mind”, and indeed, he must have been for he was able to fool most of the Hogwarts staff into thinking there was nothing of the dark magic kind about him. Quirrell’s assets include his mind, his magical prowess-he was able to bewitch Harry’s broomstick all the way from the ground, and his ability to handle trolls very well, but his flaw was his gullibility. This allowed him to be drawn in by the Dark Lord, and cost him his life. Overall, he is not a good Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, as he did not, in the end, defend himself from it, but succumbed to it.

Professor Gilderoy Lockhart

There is not really much to say about Gilderoy Lockhart. Indeed, nowadays there is not much anybody wants to say about the wizard currently being treated as a permanent resident of St. Mungo’s. Vain and obnoxious, Gilderoy Lockhart has few assets. Fabricating stories and combing one’s hair do not count in the position he was given, but, the one thing he did seem to be good at were Memory Charms, as this was his method for erasing the memory of the people he stole heroic deeds from. However, as this is hardly valuable in the subject of Defense Against the Dark Arts, it is not a highly valuable talents. His flaws can all be summed up in the fact that he had no clue what he was doing, the man couldn’t even handle a cage full of Cornish Pixies and had three twelve-year olds round them up for him. Not surprisingly, Gilderoy Lockhart is not an example of a good Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.

Professor Remus J. Lupin

Remus Lupin is often described as the “best Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher (the students) ever had”. He certainly has a good many assets that he used while teaching, and in defending students. He is an intelligent, powerful wizard-he manages to summon fire without a wand and hold it in his hand, and was in the Order of the Phoenix during both of the wars, which allotted him much experience that the previous two professors seemed to have lacked. During his classes, he also gave his students experience, by designing his classes as “hands-on”, so that they would learn more from dealing with the actual creature than by reading from a book-much to Hermione Granger’s surprise. He was even able to teach a thirteen year old boy, Harry Potter, a patronus, which is “NEWT level”, or, very advanced magic. Another example of his teaching success is how he managed to have Neville Longbottom, who was not known for his magical prowess, defeat a boggart. His method of teaching was very effective due to the fact that he was always calm, tolerant, gentle, and good-natured. He never spoke harshly to any of his students, or intimidated them, so they were more at ease when performing magic against dark creatures in front of classmates. His main flaw was the fact that he was a werewolf, and this made him miss classes, and eventually lose his job. Had he not been a werewolf, he most likely would have stayed as a professor for quite some time. Professor Lupin was definitely a good Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.

Professor Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody, or “Barty Crouch Jr.”

I shall have to compare two people in this section, only one shall be speculation and the other shall be how we know a Professor Moody taught. I will begin with the actual Moody, who never taught at Hogwarts, and will guess as to what sort of teacher he might be.

Moody certainly threw himself whole-heartedly in his defending against the dark arts. So much so, he is missing parts of his body-an eye, some of his nose, and a leg, most notably. He was a very cautious man, but did not ever shy away from danger. The eye that replaced the one he lost could see through invisibility cloaks, walls, and behind his own head. He probably would have encouraged his students to “keep an eye out for danger”, though not in precisely the same way he did. His assets include being very well versed in dark detectors, and other rare magical items. He was in possession of a Foe Glass, Secrecy Sensor, and Sneakoscope. All of these would have been incredibly helpful to teach the students about. In fact, Harry, Ron, and Hermione use a Sneakoscope to detect danger while on the hunt for horcruxes. He was in the Order of the Phoenix during both wars, like Remus Lupin, so he certainly had enough experience on his hand. Ron once said that “most of the cells in Azkaban were full thanks to him.” This clearly indicates that he has a lot of skill in fighting and capturing Dark Wizards, something he could have taught his students. His flaw is most likely his slight jumpiness when being caught unawares. When he was startled by Barty Crouch Jr., he did not defend himself quickly enough to prevent capture. But, I believe that overall, the real Mad-eye Moody would have been a good Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor.

Now, onto the man that startled him. Barty Crouch Jr. impersonated Mad-Eye Moody so that he could get close to Harry Potter, and led him to his demise. We know that he was a very intelligent young man, as he received 12 O.W.L.s when he attended Hogwarts. Barty seems to be good at what I’ll call “shady” magic. It is known that he is able of performing a powerful Imperius Curse, as he was able to control his own father with one, and he, along with Bellatrix and Rodolphus Lestrange, tortured the Longbottoms via the Cruciatus Curse into insanity. Another instance of his magical prowess is his ability to brew copious amounts of Polyjuice Potion, which he does throughout the year of 1994. He even managed to overpower Alastor Moody, confund the Goblet of Fire, and transfigure his father’s body into a bone. However, young and impressionable, he was, like Quirrell, drawn into the power of Lord Voldemort’s regime of Death Eaters. He was a rash young man, always seeking to please those he thought of as father figures, since his own father never paid much attention to him. This can be considered a flaw of his, because it was when he didn’t think his actions out that he ended up making the most costly mistakes, such as being sent to Azkaban at the age of 19. However, the methods with which he taught his students caused them to learn a lot-ironically, his teaching Harry to throw off the Imperius Curse helped to save Harry from being killed by Lord Voldemort. So, in spite of his sometime recklessness and devotion to following the Dark Arts instead of defending against them, Barty Crouch Jr. was a good Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.

Professor Dolores Umbridge

Dolores Umbridge did what many Harry Potter fans thought was imposible-be a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher more hated than Gilderoy Lockhart. She did not ever let the students actually practice defensive spells, opting instead to let them read about them in a “secure, risk-free way.” What she was really doing, however, was making sure that Dumbledore wasn’t building up an army to oppose the Ministry, which she had a comfortable job at. To ensure that she had order, and to make sure that no one spoke against her, she tortured Harry Potter, after he did just that, by having him carve I Must Not Tell Lies into his hand by using a quill that wrote in his own blood. Her only asset is that she was able to cast a strong enough Patronus that kept her and anti-Muggleborn interrogators safe from numerous Dementors. Her flaws are nearly as numerous as Gilderoy Lockhart’s, but the fact that she is a prejudicial control freak who would rather look out for herself and the Ministry than help students defend themselves in a dangerous world leads me to label her as not a good Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.

Professor Severus Snape

After many years, Severus Snape was given the position that he so greatly coveted: Professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts. As much as any Gryffindor would like to say otherwise, Snape is a talented wizard. While still at school, he made corrections in his Potions text book, and made up hexes and curses that were successfully operational. He also is said to have known “more curses and hexes than most seventh years”. Some of these charms include “Levicorpus” and “Sectumsempra”. Further evidence of his prowess at useful Potions is evident in that he could brew a “Wolfsbane Potion” for Remus Lupin every full moon. He could also perform a counter-curse on a broom from all the way in the stands while another man, with the added power of Lord Voldemort, attempted to curse it. He is also a very skilled Occlumens, as he was able to keep his status as a double-agent secret from Lord Voldemort. He is also a gifted Legilimens, which is one of the reasons why Dumbledore asked him to teach Harry Occlumency in his fifth year. He also managed to remove a curse that had been inflicted upon Dumbledore when he put on the Resurrection Stone ring, which was also a horcrux, although he could not save the old man from death via the curse. He is a very talented duelist, and could fly without the usage of a broom, something that we have only heard one other wizard do-Lord Voldemort. Snape was, unfortunately, very biased towards those of his own house, and this prevented him from giving other students the kind of help they may have needed-as is the case with Neville Longbottom, or anyone who wasn’t Hermione Granger. This instance was a tough one to call, but I believe that had Snape not been biased and a very bitter man, he would have been a brilliant professor. So, in all, Severus Snape was a good Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.

Amycus Carrow

While he wasn’t a Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor, he still must have taught his students in some way. He did not appear to teach students much, except to have them cast the Cruciatus Curse on students who broke the rules. This is not something I would consider an asset, but the fact that he could have students perform such advanced, dangerous, illegal magic is somewhat impressive. However, everything else about his teaching is a flaw. Instead of defending against the dark arts, he taught about the Dark Arts themselves, something that students should never learn. It is unknown how much experience he had as a Death Eater, but knowing what he knew about the Dark Arts would have given an interesting outlook on the Dark Arts from the view of someone who, like Snape, followed them. However, he is definitely not a good Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor, as he didn’t teach students how to defend against them, and might not even have taught them at all.

The Perfect Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor

From Quirrell, I would take the brilliant mind, because as we learned from Lockhart, a dumb professor will get you nowhere. From Lockhart, I would take knowledge of previous defeats of Dark creatures. Because although he did not perform them himself, he knew precisely what happened, and one can learn from previous ventures. From Remus Lupin I would want everything, including his werewolf status. While it certainly hurt his career as a professor, the fact that he was able to communicate with other werewolves, some of whom were considering joining with Voldemort, he learned the mentality of many dark creatures. As a previous H.E. Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher once said, “Know Thine Enemy”. From Mad-Eye Moody it would be necessary to know about Dark Detectors, as well as his skill at fighting dark wizards. From Barty Crouch Jr., his skills at harmful spells would be useful in teaching students what some dark wizards would throw at them, and how to react. Dolores Umbridge has many qualities that I dislike immensely, but one of hers that I would like to have in my perfect professor would be her ability to not flinch in the face of Dark Magic. Severus’ Snape’s ability to come up with new spells would be a wonderful thing to teach students so that they can deal with complex situations in duels, as well as his proficiency at Occlumency and Legilimency, and knowledge of the Dark Arts-as stated before, “know thine enemy”. From Amycus Carrow, I can’t say I would want anything, as he wasn’t even a DADA Professor.

But in conclusion, my perfect Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor would have all of the above, and in fact sounds a lot like Raistlin the Wizard, my current H.E. DADA Professor.

…Maybe.

Professor Quirinus Quirrell

I would have to say that Quirrel had alot of flaws. Not least, the fact that Voldemort was sticking out of hisa head. I am sure he was not a horrible teacher before Voldemort gained control but the fact that he was scared of everything isn't exactly comforting, especially in DADA teacher. Another one of his flaws was the fact that he couldn't control the class well, considering the fact that they were regarded as a joke by many students. His assessts included being knowledgeable on the subject matter and being interested enough in the ubject to want to study it abroad. All together, he was a fair DADA teacher neither wonderful nor terrible.
I give 3 our of 5 stars.

Professor Gilderoy Lockhart.

He was a DADA teacher to remember. Some of his many flaws include his overwhelming arrogance and underwhelming knowledge. He didn't have sufficent information on the subject matter and indeed spent most of the classes taking credit from things that he didn't do in the first place. Another flaw would be his cowardice. While he did show a brave front he backed away from doing anything that was possibly dangerous. His assessts include his extreme overconfidence in his own abilities and memory chamrs, which don't make him a good teacher. 1 out of 5 stars.

Professor Remus Lupin

Even though Lupin was one of the best teacher he had his flaws. One, being that he was potentially dangerous at least once a month. The other was that while most of the students respected him he was more of a friend then a teacher especially to Harry. Lupin had many assessts. His ability to realate to the student is unmatched by all the other DADA students. He defiently knows his stuff and being a member of the Order of the Phoenix he has the practical knowledge was well as history to be a good teacher. Besides that, he made learning both interesting and challenging for the kids he taught. Letting them have practical knowledge and helping them actually physically do spells gave the students confidence and a willingness to learn. His pateince and ability to make the sudents feel at ease is another asset. 4 3/4 out of 5 stars.

Alastor Mad -Eye Moody and/or Bartemis Crouch Jr.

I am including them as one because Crouch taught after he questioned Moody on how he would teach. Therefore, their methods are the same.

Moody was a good teacher, there is no denying that, however, like everyone else he did have his flaws. Being highly suspicious himself he mad the students almost as jumpy as him. In addition, he definitlyintimidates the students which from expeirence is not a good quality in a teacher. Showing the class Unforgiveable Curses was not a smart idea because the class included children whose parents or family was directly affected by the curses. Also, he acts on impulses, not always thinking through which is a problem for a teacher. Moody's assets include an amazing amount of knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject and the amount of respect his students have for him. While he is a good teach he isn't the best 4 out of 5 stars.

Dolores Jane Umbridge

Probably the worst DADA teacher, she has a great amount of flaws. Focusing on her teacher - realted ones Umbridge didn't teach. Instead, she instructed her students to read and do monotonous work for the sake of it. She didn't gain any repect from her students despite the fact that she punished them severly for minor wrong doing. In addition, needling and insulting students are two qualities that do not make a good teacher. Also, not allowing the kids to do anything practical is both a blow to their moral and hunger for learning and their education. They came away not knowing anything on the subject matter, but rather hating her. Her assets include the control she outwardly had on the class, at least for a little while. She was a horrible teacher. - 10 out of 5 stars.

Severus Snape

While not a terrible teacher Snape was not a truly wonderful one either. His flaw include intimidating students to the point of hatred and his arrogance. He constantly insults students which makes learning unenjoyable and torture for them. His assts include an undeniable passion and knowldge for the subject and his ability to control the class. He did teach them a lot regardless of their feelings for him. Snape was all in all a good teacher. 4 out of 5 stars.

Amycus Carrow

Since Harry did not know him or his teaching style I cannot really describe him.

Perfect DADA Teacher

I would describe the perfect DADA teacher as someone who the students respected like Lupin and Moody. This is important because they need to be able to relate to the students to make learning more enjoyable. I would take Snape, Lupin, Quirrel and Moody's knowledge. This is essential in becoming a teacher because if you don't have it, what are you teaching. I would take Lockharts confidence. It is important to be confident when you are teaching because it gains you respect so long as you are not vain and arrogant. *cough cough* I would also take Snape's passion because passion is irreplaceable in a teacher. Finally I would take Snape, Moody and Lupin's experience because it is essential to have practical expeirence when teaching students.
