Camping Badge Camp

I decided that I would be a good idea to use the nature around me to help create my shelter. I only used a few supplies. Some of which can be found on any camping trip. I used some rope and tied it from one end of a tree to the other end of the tree. Then I got some sticks and a tarp. I placed the trap over the rope and used the sticks that I gathered to help hold up the rope well keeping the tarp in position.

Next I used some tie twisters to help hold the tarp on the rope and to make sure that the wind doesn’t blow it off. Afterwards I placed a blanket inside the tarp and help set it up to make it a very useful shelter. Once that was done I placed a fire next to the shelter for warmth during the night, as well to keep predators away.

Part 2:
Walking around my shelter I found a few rocks and dry sticks. I placed them beside me and formed the rocks into a nice deep pit that will help contain the fire. This is a safer method when dealing with your own fire pits. Always a good idea to come prepared. Next I would gather my flint and try to get some wool from my clothing. This will help get the fire going and then I would place a few twigs and sticks on the fire.

Taking a can of beans and using my can opener on my swiss army knife; I would open it and place it on the fire coals. This will help heat up the can and cook my beans to nice warmth. Once that’s done I gently place the can beside me and grab a fork and eat it. Mmm beans.

Part 3:
Day 1
We finally arrived to our camp site. The air was blowing a cold breeze as we unpacked our truck. Gathering our stuff together we unpacked and cleaned up the trailer. Nothing much seemed to happen except we did see a few squirrels fighting over the last bit of nuts that seemed to be undisturbed on the ground. After we finished unpacking and cleaning out the trailer, me and my father went to gather some fire wood. He decided that it was a good idea to start early as it gets dark quickly here. After dinner we listened to some music by the fire pit. I was so tired and went to bed earlier then normal.

Day 2
Today we went on the most awesomest adventure. It involved my father, a canoe, and only one paddle. He somehow thought it was possible to canoe with only one paddle. Unfortunately all he got was soaking wet well I took a few pictures and was ready to go home and plaster them on facebook. Afterwards Mom and I chatted about the adventure Dad tried to have in the morning well we sat down and have a quick bite to eat. Later that night we went to a friend’s farm and rode their horses. What and adventure that was.

Day 3
Grandma and Grandpa joined us today. It was quite a surprise when their car pulled in. Once they arrived we helped them unpack and sat with them for a while. The tea was delicious. Grandma always made the best. Once our vist was over, it was time to help Grandma cook some dinner. All around us was glorious food and seemed to overwhelm me. I couldn’t believe that we were camping and yet had a ton of food. Later that night after a few brandys it was time for bed as tomorrow was approaching fast.

Day 4
One the sun rose, I jumped out of bed. Today was the day. Grandpa and I were going fishing. Oh the memories of when I was young seemed to carry on towards the future. Gather my clothes I headed towards Grandpas trailer. He was already awake and sipping his coffee. After a few hours of fishing we caught 3 fish. I caught the smallest but I didn’t matter. It was all going to be breakfast. After our wonderful fish breakfast, me and Mom decided it was a good idea to get things ready for tomorrow.

Day 5
Sleeping in felt nice after a hard day of fishing yesterday. I seemed like this week flew by, and now it was almost time to say good bye. It was a long drive home and we didn’t have that much time to spend here today. Gathering up some stuff we had breakfast with Grandma and Grandpa. Then we loaded the truck, waved goodbye and only wished for another week like this one.

Camping Badge Campingec4

1. Knowing the area well, I had headed for the natural caves that stood empty beyond the trees. They provide shelter to the elements, and are cool in summer. It also meant that I needn’t carry as much in my pack, and could forgo the tent in favour of the cave.

However, lighting a fire inside the cave seemed a bad idea – the smoke would have gathered in the formations above, and it would have been slightly disastrous with no ventilation. With that in mind, I decided that a tarp overhanging the cave’s entrance would provide escape for the fire’s smoke, and further shade and shelter.

I used four poles (two large, two smaller) that deconstructed for convenience. Forcing them deep into the hard-packed dirt before the cave, I made sure they fit to the size of the tarp, and secured them to the tarp with twine, before they went into the earth.

2. After assembling the tinder, I’d place two pieces of fuel wood parallel on either side of the tinder. Using a match, I’d light the tinder and feed it kindling until the fire had built up a little. Then I’d add alternating perpendicular layers of fuelwood on top of the two pieces already established.

Using this cross-fire method of building a campfire, I could cook using the coals. Wrapping food in aluminum foil, the food would be placed under the hot coals of the fire and left to cook for as long as necessary.

Foods I would cook using this method would include potatoes, bread, and seafood to name a few.

3. (I’m Australian so I’m writing this by my seasons – February is Summer, here.)

February 2007 - Day One

It’s the first day of my expedition and I’m quite excited to get underway. At the moment I’m waiting for the truck to come which will drive me as close to the track I plan to traverse as possible. My bag is packed, my canteen is full to the brim, and I’ve done all I can to prepare – I’m pumped!

I don’t know what I’m more excited about – the chance of seeing the Australian outback firsthand or the freedom this trip is giving me!

Oh, here comes the truck!

February 2007 – Day Two

I’m writing this from ‘Base’ as I’ve come to call it in the last few hours. I made it okay to my site yesterday, the natural caves that have formed beside the river. I’m stoked, absolutely stoked. It was easy going to stow my things in the cave and set up the tarp and fire outside. The whole time I kept thinking about the wonderful time I’d had of walking the track.

The gum trees, the jacarandas, the underbrush filled with little critters – mice and echidnas, I even saw a wombat! And then last night, I sat by the campfire and watched as a possum gradually came closer and closer to me, smelling the food I had cooked, but wary of humans. Eventually he came quite close and deftly picked the bread I held from my fingers and scampered off. Little tyke!

February 2007 – Day Three

I left Base to venture into the wilderness today. It was lovely, I took so many pictures! It was terribly hot, however. I expected the heat, but it’s always worse when you’re experiencing it, not anticipating it. I found that I had to fan myself with my hat as I walked – and now I have terrible sunburn! I’ve promised myself more sunscreen from now on.

February 2007 – Day Four

I’d found a natural still pool on my wanderings the day before, and decided to go for a swim today. Of course, I wondered about parasites and the like – but I’d searched for information about them before I left (pedantic and anal-retentive as I am) and thought there was nothing to worry about.

I needn’t worry about peeping toms, as I was in the middle of Aussie bushland and no one was around but the crickets, so I stripped naked and had myself a refreshing swim. It felt like nothing else after two hot, scorching days walking through the sun.

February 2007 – Day Five

I didn’t feel like doing much today, so mostly I just hung around Base and read one of the two novels I had brought with me.

But just before the sun began to set, I headed out to search for some of the berries and herbs I knew grew around the area, and ended up at the precipice of a small cliff and saw that the sun was setting. It was beautiful, and I stood there and watched the whole thing. I didn’t even regret that I forgot my camera. The sight was enough for me.
