BATTLE THREE: Skins vs. Friends

Welcome to the third Fandom Battle of Fandom Month. This is the thread for the Skins vs. Friends debate.

Which comedy is your favourite? Gritty Skins with it's real-life charm or the surreal nature of Friends? Is Maxxie funnier than Chandler?

Come up with arguments and points about why one is better than the other, remembering to back your arguments up with quotes, references, pictures etc. However - remember to always be polite and considerate of others views! This isn't a place to bash one or the other, but to have a proper debate.

Only post in this thread if you have been assigned to one of the groups below. You may notice that some people have been assigned to more than one battle - however, they will still only end up with one score as it will be averaged.

Remember to state which side you are arguing for at the top of each post.

I thought it would be best to start off the debate with a little background of Friends and why it is so great for those of you that haven't watched it yet. *pats* You haven't lived until you've watched Friends. Just ask Elana or Streamers who I've introduced Friends to! You're welcome you guys.

Ahh, the theme song that always guarantees that I’ll come running. It didn’t matter if the episode was from Season 1 (the beginning when the show was just starting off) or Season 7-10 (when I considered the show in it’s prime). Every episode in this show is a gem! A witty, laugh out loud ‘til your sides split, spit on your neck gem. Okay, so that didn’t really make much sense, but it is what it is. This show may not be a thought provoking mystery, or a tear jerking drama, or even a heart stopping thriller. It’s merely a comedy. A comedy with light hearted humor that’s only purpose is to make you happy. And to me, that’s the best type of show there is. At a first glance, or summary, this show would seem pretty average and ordinary. Six friends living in New York. Been there, done that. No, it’s the characters and their lines that make this show what it is. Great.

Enter the big brother of the group. Ross. Although his parents considered him to be perfect, his life was far from it. With his three failed marriages, two illegitimate children, as Chandler says “the ad writes itself”. His obsession with dinosaurs and his horrible flirting is only the few characteristics that give us great hilarious episodes. Although he is considered the weakest character in the group, it still wouldn’t be the same without him.

The other Geller sibling. Monica. Always overshadowed in their parents’ eyes by Ross. She does what she can to stand out. A natural neat freak, she takes cleanliness to an entirely abnormal level. Of course, there were certain moments that could have traumatically affected her in her childhood. Being sent to her room without dinner, causing her to eat the uncooked macaroni off her jewelry box. Very little glitter and hardly any glue included. Or when she was sent to fat camp and was caught trying to escape. She claimed to have been climbing the fence before getting caught in the barbed wire when she tried to help a squirrel but other authorities claimed that she was trying to eat it instead. Or perhaps it happened later on when she was watching her senior prom video only to realize that her parents taped over it to record themselves "in the act of love". Only then to catch the actual show in real life less than a year later.

Then there’s Rachel Green. Monica’s childhood best friend who stuck by her through thick and thin. Or at least through Monica’s thick and thin moments. She started off as a self absorbed, spoiled, slightly clueless girl into a successful mom. What caused this change? It could have been when she made the best decision of all and dump her fiancé Barry, who was cheating on her with her maid of honor Mindy, whom he later married then cheated on again with Rachel. Or it could have been her years of being a waitress at Central Perk serving coffee day in and day out only to quit to pursue her dream and work for a clothing line. Only then to serve coffee there instead. Or getting that wonderful job at Bloomingdale's and soon to Ralph Lauren...ahh how times have changed...

Phoebe…now there’s a completely original character if I had to name one. Although it was probably in her genetics that she’d end up so odd. Her parents were not exactly what you’d call normal. With her dad who likes to run out on his families, mom Lily who ended up killing herself, stepdad who ended up in jail after her mom’s death causing Phoebe to end up living in the street in a box, and birthmom who she found later on that her two moms and dad was labeled the Three Losers in school and was a couple. From her identical, lying waitress/porn star sister that she never speaks to. Or her younger brother who likes to burn things (literally) and ends up marrying his teacher and asks Phoebe to be their kids’ surrogate mother. Yes, this blond massage therapist/musician was unforgettable. There’s so much I could say about Phoebe but you’d only have to see her in action to truly appreciate how wonderfully weird she is. xD And there’s no better way to show her off with the gift of her music.

Ironically, Joey’s (who has no words) best friend is Mr. Chandler Bing. Who has too many words. He’s the wisecracking one of the group with all the jokes that he always uses as a defensive mechanism in a difficult situation. Which he’s had plenty enough of growing up as his father divorced his mother to be with the poll boy and join a Las Vegas show called Viva Las Gaygas. Yet being Ross’s friend since college, he too was very awkward with the ladies causing him to have very unforgettable relationships such as “Oh My God” Janice, to the Ginger the girl with a wooden leg, to the girl who talks and yells in her sleep.
