| Arithmancy for Beginners
Arithmancy is a subject taught at Hogwarts, the subjects itself revolves around numerology and a branch of magic concerned with the magical properties of numbers. The subject itself includes working and memorizing larger number chards. Arithmancy is quite similar to divination instead of using crystal balls you use numbers, this method was first used by the Greeks. The numbers are assigned to letter and these foretell, the outcomes of battle and prophecies in the near future. Arithmancy has been divided the alphabet into three parts, each part composed of seven letters which they attributed to the then known seven planets. Wizards today use a similar system, all these thousands of years later.

| Arithmancy for Beginners: Teach Me
Arithmancy is an elective taught at Hogwarts. It was formed off the Ancient Greek’s Isopsephy. It is a sort of method that people use to analyze people or foretell the future using numbers. It is common for people to memorize large number charts in the practice of Arithmancy, in which each number up to 9 is assigned to different letters. These numbers are categorized and represent different character and personality traits. Everybody is represented by three different numbers. The Character number tells about someone’s basic personality and is determined by the sum of all the vowels in a name based off of a number chart. The heart number shows emotions or thoughts that people hold within themselves which is determined upon the total of constants in the name. Lastly, the social number shows how one would interact with others around them. Arithmancy is similar to astrology, in the fact of determining the good and bad days for an individual. It also gives guidance in life choices, such as romantic and social life. That’s not to say that one should always make decisions based on the numbers that represent them.

| This is the chart used for arithmancy - become VERY familiar with this! Now, Etta dear, I know that you can do Arithmancy if you put your mind to it! Once you get the system down there's really no way you can go wrong unless you're poor at addition! But that can be improved as well, have no fear. Since you've chosen to take Arithmancy, I take it that you have a teensy bit of an idea of what this class entails, but I'll give you a brief overview just in case you were dozing off last class. Arithmancy isn't a required course here at Hogwarts, but an elective that can be taken third year on. It is a magical way of fortune telling, but is very different from one like Divination. Arithmancy is based on numbers and their meanings while Divination is based more on belief in the Inner Eye than hard fact. Arithmancy studies the Heart, Character, and Social numbers of an item. You can calculate the numbers for just about anything, from your cousin's name to your favorite breakfast cereal. The Heart number reveals your inner heart, any wishes and fears you may be hiding from others and even yourself; the Character number points out your general disposition and personality; and the Social number is the part of yourself that you let the world see. To calculate these numbers, you write down whatever you're wishing to evaluate and put the corresponding numbers (from the chart) beneath. Here, I'll do an example as I explain so it makes more sense. E L A N A 5 3 1 5 1 Next, you add up all of the numbers. 5 + 3 + 1 + 5 + 1 = 15 If you wind up with a two digit number, add those numbers together. Continue doing this until you end up with a one digit number. 1 + 5 = 6 This is your Character number! The Heart number is found by adding up all of the vowels in the item. Again, if you end up with a two digit number, reduce it until it is only one digit. E L A N A 5 3 1 5 1
5 + 1 + 1 = 7 The Social number is found by adding up all of the consonants in the item. E L A N A 5 3 1 5 1
3 + 5 = 8 Now that you know the numbers, you can look up their meanings! I hope you have a better understanding of Arithmancy and can have more success with it in the future! Source: http://www.sorcererscompanion.net/arithmancy.html
