| Discussion Class: Creature Combat
Welcome to the first discussion class of the new term.
For this class, I'd like participants to choose a magical creature - which you will then be the voice of for the duration of the discussion. Your task is to discuss and debate why you, as your chosen creature, is the best of all the magical creatures in the wizarding world.
Try to develop your arguments, and respond to other people's points.
Remember to state at the beginning of each post you make what your chosen creature is.
Points 100 points available
Have fun! | |

| [Owl]
Taking a look at all creatures gathered here so far, I feel the discussion needs a beginning and thus I will open it now with my statement. I, as an owl, am surely the most important and intelligent creature with magical abilities in all of the wizarding world. We are both pets and messengers, affectionate and effective, needy and needed. where would so many wizards be without us? The simple fact that we are the main way of communicating in the magical world makes me believe there cannot be any creature better than we are any way. And yet, by the looks some of you are giving me that is not evidence enough. Well, then let me say something about our mixture of good qualities.
As I said, we deliver messages from one witch or wizard to another, but there is more to us: If we are given a letter, we can figure out on our own where to bring it, at which location the receiving one can either be found or expected to arrive in short time. We know how to ensure payment and are not to be cheated out of it by easy tricks. Owls like me can even grant you a response from your communication partner if you tell us so! As you can see, owls are a perfect way of staying in contact, even if you do not wish for a straight away talk or need to get something to another witch or wizard across the continent.
However, on top of this we also make great pets. It is not just the impressive resemblance to our respective owners that allows us to be considered unique, it is the combination of our skill and intelligence with the emotional, almost human ways we behave at times. Offering company to lonely magic people, showing sadness and joy they can relate to, acting annoyed in case they make a mistake - we do all this and a lot more. Furthermore we as well help each other in our owl communities for example of owls living in the same neighbourhood. Can you see how that characterizes us as the perfect pet?
Now combine the impression of a reliable, self-thinking messenger with the idea of a loving, affectionate pet, and you should see just why we are the best. You are not yet convinced? Take into account our good nature, only bad if we perceive it as a situation in which to be right. Never would we think of attacking anybody without reason, but should the moment require it, we can be rather impressing and adamantly defending. We can spend loong periods of time away from our owner's home and look after ourselves, too, another good thing especially for those in the world who feel a need to stay independent. And while we are outside, noone will feel suspicious, we can tour the area without seeming suspicious at all, because even Muggles know that owls exist and would never guess we were different from what they think we are.
Now which other creature offers all of those advantages?

| My dear friend the owl, I can see how your argument is true. You are very important creature in this magical world. But, my friend, us unicorns are special too. Though we may not deliver mail to our wizard friends, we have great feelings of love for them. Many seem to think that unicorns are all kind and loyal. Alas, this is not true with all of us. I, for one, am very loyal to out wizard friends. Why? Because I, for one, trust them. So far, I have experienced no hostility from any of them. Just love and happiness.
Though hint when I say- I, for one. Not all of us trust the magic folk. Not all magic folk trust us. My dear friend the owl, I ask, how can all of you be so loyal and willing to wizards and witches? You seem to have lost your freedom! Surrendered it to them! I say, be friends from a distance! Be as trustworthy to them as they deserve! That is your weak point. One day.....humans, magical or not, cannot hold there peace. And when that time comes, you owls will have much suffering.
And now I speak again for the unicorns. We are completely free. Allies with the magic folk, but not there slaves. We live in peace where we want to, do what we want to. My kind is strong, not only physically, but in our hearts as well. We will never surround that freedom of ours, not to anyone. So my friend the owl, though you might be able to fly, and feel your are truly more special because you have such a strong connection with your witches and wizards, we will still be the ones more supreme in the end. We will be standing stronger than ever when you fall. And that is what makes our kind higher one this cruel pyramid of survival.

| [Owl]
A unicorn, sure to survive in this world longer than us owls do? Foreseeing our downfall because of our close relation to the wizarding folk? My dear, may I remind you of a fact that makes your survival more than doubtful? Your blood, as it is, keeps a human alive no matter how close he might be to death. Regardless of it being a sinful, an unforgivable act, there are ones out there who will give anything to live, who will not be taken back by any cost. Your life, my dear, is endangered by what makes you alive. Do you not see how that affects your kind?
You cannot bond with wizards the way we do, you cannot live the easy life we live. If you come to close to them, you may seal your fate forevermore, whereas we are barely ever killed by magic people. Why would they do so? We are not the purest, the most innocent, the ones who will keep them in their precious existences - we are only messengers. We do not surrender ourselves to them, by no means we ever would. We are free to come and go as we please, there is hardly a wizard or witch who keeps their owl in a cage for more than a journey, if anything.
Do you not understand, miraculous being that you are, that we did not subject ourselves to them, but they made themselves depend on us? Without us, problems would arise to the whole population of this world we both belong into. No single wizard could have any desire to wipe our species off this planet, whereas you are in permanent danger of being slain. Not only by our people, mind you, because what would you do if a Muggle ever saw you? You would be dead on the spot, I am quite sure of that, or at least captured without a chance of finding release ever again. One might even be drawn to say you could pose a threat to the magic world, for the discovery of your kind would lead every single magical being to a horrid future.
We, the owls, on the other hand, can travel both worlds freely with just the slightest care, and even sightings of my kind during daytime, unusual as they are, would never be perceived as a sign of danger. Furthermore, if the word broke into the non-magical world that this second community exists on the same planet, all of you magical beings without representance in the Muggle world will live in peace again. Contrary to this outlook, we could simply retreat to being what those people think we are - birds who roam the world in the dark, rarely seen but not a danger at all, without any abilities or the like that make us desirable.

| I see your point, dear owl. But what does this mean? If we are in danger by the magic folk, what are we to do? You make it sound us unicorns should completly terminate them. Destroy the wizrds and witches before they destroy us. Is that what you mean? If I didn't know any better, I would be sending for there extermination right now, if we are that much in danger.
But I do know better, and I shall not play this bloody game. For those foolish enough to want to be ride of our kind for our blood.....can they not see that there will be no more unicorns? Are they really that unbright to see without us, there will be no more unicorn blood to live off? My friend, I truly belive that our magic allys are not that unintelligent. And only a few have ever slain us to drink our blood. Maybe your right, maybe we should worry, but now, for the time being, we are in no harm.
And as for the muggles, they don't trust each other. There are more important things going on in there world than a few spotings of us magical horses with horns. I belive we have absalutly no worries.

| Well as owls and unicorns are good magical creatures.A phoenix though never really dies if you think about. It may burst into flames but its reborn into ashes. Like what happened to Fawks. There also great for magic like in the 5th movie when fawkes helped dumbledore escape. So i think a phoenix are great magical creatures. | |

| Kris, would you please read the assignment and any other posts properly? I am quite sure every animal may only be entered once, and the Phoenix was claimed by Rigby Dumbledore right at the beginning. So maybe change your posts to talk about any creature that's still up for grabs? | |

| Again, please check above for I'm sure every creature is to be entered by only one person. Rigby already claimed it before you did, so as Kris you might want to change your post and talk about a creature not yet claimed by anybody. Surely there's a bunch that's still left.... | |

| Im sorry but that was never a rule. I asked, and even if the Phoenix was chosen I was the first to give a discriptive reason to why I chose the Phoenix. Sure there are many creatures left to discuss BUT this disscussion is "what do you think is the beat magical creature?", not a random one. Please understand and not get mad at me.

| i agree theres no reason to get mad. We can chose whatever magical creature we want.
Now i don't think i said exactly why i chose the phoenix so ill tell you now. I chose it because to me its one of the most magical creatures of all of them. Because they use magic and they can heal ppl with there tears. And like i said they never really die. There just reborn in there ashes. They are also very smart creatures and sometimes they can be like owls and send messages or items. Like in the second movie when Fawkes brought the sorting hat to Harry. So thats why i think phoenix's are the best. And dont get me wrong every other creature is good too i just think that the phoenix is better magicaly .

| ok whatever. I'm just going to continure too.
Dear phoenix, you are great and powerful birds, i must admit. Your tears are absalutly helpful, and your kind are so friendly and true. And unlike our friend the owl here, you can live much longer. Which brings me to my point. As you said, you, in a sense, live forever. Sure, maybe your are reborn the same, but think about it. You can't die from ever getting old or sick, your body just recycles itself. What is the point? I for one, and I'm sure I speak for many more, consider living forever the worst punishment and tourcher that could be given to any living creature.

| Dear Unicorn i agree with what you said at the end. It would be tourcher to live forever. It would get kind of old. I might recycle myself but the point is that it doesn't matter how long i live. I don't care about that, but its what i do for people in my life. It could be whatever, helping them or simply just being there. Don't Unicorns help people in away? I mean think about don't all magical creatures help in away? Possibly even being killed for a person or someone like Voldermort. Like in the second movie when he was drinking the Unicorns blood. Phoenix's help just in a bit of a different way. So it doesn't matter that ill never grow old or get sick. What matters is knowing that i'm helping people even with my magic. | |

| I see your ponit Phoenix. You do seem to care deeply about what good you do in life. And you can even help people by choice, unlike us unicorns who must be slain like some worthless pig. The saddist part of it all is our blood does not do good things to your health either. Why must humans, magical or not, be so greedy? Anyways, my friend, I'm glad you see point in your life, and if I where a phoenix I would certinly be happy knowing that I would be helping others because I wanted to, and it would not kill me either. Now answer me this, friend. Do you ever feel like, maybe, your being used? That possibly your kind are just treated so kindly and one day when your tears prehaps no longer do anything....how do you know you won't all just be a waist to the wizardsing kind? If you happened to be in our place, you would see how corrupted all people are. Some still see us for waht we unicorns really are, but most are to blind by there own life and own feelings to care for others. Do you not see our kind quickly dying out because of what they've done? Please, phoenix, answer me this. | |

| I see what your saying. And your right being a phoenix we can be used. And once we've run out of magic for humans, then they'll just toss away. We won't mean anything to them. And i was wrong to say that unicorns helped people because your right its a matter of wanting to help not being forced to. And unlike me unicorns risk there lives just being forced to do what people want, unlike me i don't. My life is never in danger really. But also not all humans force creatures as ourselves to do things that could kill us. The question that i have is should we trust humans or not? | |
