| Homework on Moons 1.) How do people today think the moon was created? What did it leave behind when it came to be? (2) People believe that a planet about the size of Mars hit the Earth. The planet itself was destroyed, and the Earth came very close to being destroyed as well. The planet hit earth with such force, that the molten iron in its core eventually traveled and entered the Earth's core itself. This explosion sent tons of rock and debri flying into space, this formed the moon. It left behind other debri, which rained down onto earth. 2.) Where do the craters on the surface of the moon come from? (1) During a time early in the solar system when there were many asteroids flying about. 3.) Who was the first man on the moon? The second? And who was the third one who was circling the moon with a rocket? (2) The first man on the moon was Neil Armstrong. The second was Buzz Aldrin. The third was Pete Conrad (I think...I can't remember) 4.) What were the first words spoken on the moon? (1) "That's one small step for man but one giant leap for mankind." 5.) How long does the moon take to circle the earth once? (1) 27.3 days 6.) What are the dark parts of the moon called, and what does it mean? (1) Maria-because they are like "oceans" 7.) Name three different things, people have thought to see when looking at the surface of the moon. (3) That there is a man on the moon. The moon is made of cheese. (Swiss! Because of the craters) The moon disappears at times. (Waxing and waning) 8.) When does a Lunar Eclipse happen? (1) During a new moon, when the moon passes through the Earth's shadow. 9.) What effect does the moon’s gravitation have on the earth? (1) It causes the tides to change. 10.) What was the very first manmade object to land on the moon and when did it do so? (1) The unmanned Soviety probe Luna 2. 11.) Give me the Latin and Greek names for the Moon. (1) Latin-Menses. Greek-Mene 12.) How many kilometers is the Moon away from the Earth? (1) The earth is 402336 away from the moon. 13.) How many moons has Venus, Neptune, Saturn (name two each) (5) Venus-None and none. Neptune-Naiad and Thalassa (has 8) Saturn-Mimas and Titan (has 18) 14.) What year were the two moons of Mars discrovered and by whom? (2) By a "keen eyed astronomer" in 1877 15.) which is the planet in our solar system that has the most moons? How many are there? (2) Saturn has 19 moons. (Extra credit: 10 points if you can give me the names of all of them. the ones that have actual real names are enough) 1.Titan 2.Rhea 3.Iapetus 4.Mimas 5.Enceladus 6. | 1.) How do people today think the moon was created? What did it leave behind when it came to be? (2)there are four theories about the creation of the moon, though the one that is believe to be most precise is this: When the earth was young, another planet, the size of mars, crashed into it at a high speed which nearly destroyed earth and completely destroyed the other planet. When the planet was destroyed, the molten iron from its core continued to travel through the earth and rested inside the earths core. This debris from this collision eventually formed the moon 2.) Where do the craters on the surface of the moon come from? (1)From the time when asteroids broke and hit the moon leaving deep impacts 3.) Who was the first man on the moon? The second? And who was the third one who was circling the moon with a rocket? (2)Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the Moon. The second was Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins orbitd the moon 4.) What were the first words spoken on the moon? (1)"That's one small step for man but one giant leap for mankind." 5.) How long does the moon take to circle the earth once? (1)The Moon orbits the Earth every 27.3 days 6.) What are the dark parts of the moon called, and what does it mean? (1)They are called 'maria' after oceans 7.) Name three different things, people have thought to see when looking at the surface of the moon. (3)The most common is the man in the moon. The Japanese people talk about the rabbit on the moon and others say they can see that it is made of cheese. 8.) When does a Lunar Eclipse happen? (1)It happens when the moon comes in front of the sun during a new moon. 9.) What effect does the moonās gravitation have on the earth? (1)It affects certain things as climate changes, tidal waves, etc 10.) What was the very first manmade object to land on the moon and when did it do so? (1)The Soviet spacecraft Luna 2 (Lunik 2) crashed into Moon on September 14, 1959. 11.) Give me the Latin and Greek names for the Moon. (1)The Latin name is Menses. The Greek name is Mene 12.) How many kilometers is the Moon away from the Earth? (1)it is 250000 miles from Earth to the moon (i dont know km - but that is miles) 13.) How many moons has Venus, Neptune, Saturn (name two each) (5)Venus has none. Neptune has two, Triton and Nereid and Saturn has 19 known ones, two of which are Titan and Rhia 14.) What year were the two moons of Mars discrovered and by whom?in 1877 by American astronomer Asaph Hall 15.) which is the planet in our solar system that has the most moons? How many are there? | Homework on Moons 1.) People believe that the moon was created through the so called 'big bang'. Another planet collided with earth and left behind some iron in the core of the earth, whilst leaving bits of the planet spinning into orbit which they believe created the moon. 2.) The craters on the moon come from asteroids which have collided with the moon at such a speed that they left these dents, now know as craters 3.) The first man on the moon was neil armstrong followed closely by buzz aldrin. 4.) one small step for man one giant leap for mankind 5.) 27.3 days 6.) they are called Maria's as they look like oceans 7.) A face, which are al the shadows, an old man carrying a bundle of sticks upon his back which has been dubbed 'the man in the moon' and a man is carrying willow bows (depending on what religeon) 8.) when the moon passes in front of the sun causing the day to turn into night. this happens during a new moon. 9.) the most obvious effect is the tides. 10.) The Russian spacecraft Luna 9 11.) Menses and Mene 12.) 384403 kilometers 13.) venus = 0 Neptune = 2 (Triton and Nereid ) Saturn = 19 (Atlas and Mimas) 14.) 1877 by Asaph Hall 15.) Saturn with 19 (Extra credit: 10 points if you can give me the names of all of them. the ones that have actual real names are enough) although there are 19, only 16 have been named. these are: 1.Tethys 2. | Homework on Moons 1.) How do people today think the moon was created? What did it leave behind when it came to be? (2) Due to centrifugal force, a chunk of the Earth was sent into space, into orbit of the Earth, becoming the Moon. It left behind a crater that is probably the Pacific Basin. 2.) Where do the craters on the surface of the moon come from? (1) Asteroids that hit the moon left a dent in it. 3.) Who was the first man on the moon? The second? And who was the third one who was circling the moon with a rocket? (2) Neil Armstrong, Edwin āBuzzā Aldrin and Michael Collins 4.) What were the first words spoken on the moon? (1) Thatās one small step for man but a giant leap for mankind 5.) How long does the moon take to circle the earth once? (1) 27.3 days approximately 6.) What are the dark parts of the moon called, and what does it mean? (1) A dark part is called a mare (pl. maria). Maria is Latin for seas because that is what they were mistaken for. 7.) Name three different things, people have thought to see when looking at the surface of the moon. (3) The Man on the Moon, A rabbit, I see a finger and a wolf as well. 8.) When does a Lunar Eclipse happen? (1) When the Earth gets between the Moon and the Sun 9.) What effect does the moonās gravitation have on the earth? (1) It creates tides at different times as it pulls on the water mass. 10.) What was the very first manmade object to land on the moon and when did it do so? (1) The Lunar II Space Probe in 1959 11.) Give me the Latin and Greek names for the Moon. (1) Roman: Luna, Diana, Thracian Bendis. Greek: Selene, Phoebe, Artemis 12.) How many kilometers is the Moon away from the Earth? (1) 384 403 km (Semi-major axis) 13.) How many moons has Venus, Neptune, Saturn (name two each) (5) Venus was thought to have a moon named Neith, but now that has been discredited and Venus has no natural satellites. Neptune has 13 known moons: some are Triton, Nereid, Proteus, Naiad, Thalassa, Despina, Galatea and Larissa. | 1. How was Moon formed? One theory is when our solar system was created, another planet smashed into the Earth, causing leaving iron in the earth's core (possibly why the earth has magnetic poles) and causing lots of debris to fly into space. The biggest 'bit' of this debris was the moon, which remained in orbit around the moon, whilst the other rocks are flying around space, as asteroids etc. 2. How did moon get craters? Asteroids, meteorites and comets that have hit the moon ā it has no atmosphere to burn up debris and rock, unlike the earth, which is relatively safe from most objects in space because of our atmosphere. 3. Who was 1st, 2nd and orbited around the Moon? 1 ā Neil Armstrong 2 ā Buzz Aldrin 3 ā Micheal Collins 4. 1st words on moon? That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. 5. Length of one orbit? 27.3 days 6. What are the dark bits called and what do they look like? āMariaā, and they look like oceans. 7. 1 ā That there is a man on/in the moon, or that the moon is a face (all children think that!) 2 ā That the moon is made of cheese (probably because of Wallace and Gromit) 3 ā A rabbit 8. When there's a full moon and it passes in between the Earth and the sun, bocking out the sun. 9. It 'controls' the tides as it affects masses of water. 10. The Russian spacecraft Luna 2, in 1959 11. latin: luna (source = The Aeneid, my set text for GCSE Latin ā it has come in useful!) greek: Selene (I searched for this, there was also Artemis) 12. 384, 403 or 238, 857 miles 13. Venus ā No moons! Neptune ā 13 known moons at the moment, the 2 biggest are Triton and Proteus Saturn ā At the moment, 47, 2 first discovered ā Titus, Iapetus 14. Asaph Hall discovered them in 1877, and called them Phobos and Deimos 15.
