Homework on Moons

1.) How do people today think the moon was created? What did it leave behind when it came to be? (2) People believe that a planet about the size of Mars hit the Earth. The planet itself was destroyed, and the Earth came very close to being destroyed as well. The planet hit earth with such force, that the molten iron in its core eventually traveled and entered the Earth's core itself. This explosion sent tons of rock and debri flying into space, this formed the moon. It left behind other debri, which rained down onto earth.

2.) Where do the craters on the surface of the moon come from? (1) During a time early in the solar system when there were many asteroids flying about.

3.) Who was the first man on the moon? The second? And who was the third one who was circling the moon with a rocket? (2) The first man on the moon was Neil Armstrong. The second was Buzz Aldrin. The third was Pete Conrad (I think...I can't remember)

4.) What were the first words spoken on the moon? (1) "That's one small step for man but one giant leap for mankind."

5.) How long does the moon take to circle the earth once? (1) 27.3 days

6.) What are the dark parts of the moon called, and what does it mean? (1) Maria-because they are like "oceans"

7.) Name three different things, people have thought to see when looking at the surface of the moon. (3) That there is a man on the moon. The moon is made of cheese. (Swiss! Because of the craters) The moon disappears at times. (Waxing and waning)

8.) When does a Lunar Eclipse happen? (1) During a new moon, when the moon passes through the Earth's shadow.

9.) What effect does the moon’s gravitation have on the earth? (1) It causes the tides to change.

10.) What was the very first manmade object to land on the moon and when did it do so? (1) The unmanned Soviety probe Luna 2.

11.) Give me the Latin and Greek names for the Moon. (1) Latin-Menses. Greek-Mene

12.) How many kilometers is the Moon away from the Earth? (1) The earth is 402336 away from the moon.

13.) How many moons has Venus, Neptune, Saturn (name two each) (5) Venus-None and none. Neptune-Naiad and Thalassa (has 8) Saturn-Mimas and Titan (has 18)

14.) What year were the two moons of Mars discrovered and by whom? (2) By a "keen eyed astronomer" in 1877

15.) which is the planet in our solar system that has the most moons? How many are there? (2) Saturn has 19 moons.

1.) How do people today think the moon was created? What did it leave behind when it came to be? (2)

there are four theories about the creation of the moon, though the one that is believe to be most precise is this:

When the earth was young, another planet, the size of mars, crashed into it at a high speed which nearly destroyed earth and completely destroyed the other planet. When the planet was destroyed, the molten iron from its core continued to travel through the earth and rested inside the earths core. This debris from this collision eventually formed the moon

2.) Where do the craters on the surface of the moon come from? (1)

From the time when asteroids broke and hit the moon leaving deep impacts

3.) Who was the first man on the moon? The second? And who was the third one who was circling the moon with a rocket? (2)

Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the Moon. The second was Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins orbitd the moon

4.) What were the first words spoken on the moon? (1)

"That's one small step for man but one giant leap for mankind."

5.) How long does the moon take to circle the earth once? (1)

The Moon orbits the Earth every 27.3 days

6.) What are the dark parts of the moon called, and what does it mean? (1)

They are called 'maria' after oceans

7.) Name three different things, people have thought to see when looking at the surface of the moon. (3)

The most common is the man in the moon. The Japanese people talk about the rabbit on the moon and others say they can see that it is made of cheese.

8.) When does a Lunar Eclipse happen? (1)

It happens when the moon comes in front of the sun during a new moon.

9.) What effect does the moonā€™s gravitation have on the earth? (1)

It affects certain things as climate changes, tidal waves, etc

10.) What was the very first manmade object to land on the moon and when did it do so? (1)

The Soviet spacecraft Luna 2 (Lunik 2) crashed into Moon on September 14, 1959.

11.) Give me the Latin and Greek names for the Moon. (1)

The Latin name is Menses. The Greek name is Mene

12.) How many kilometers is the Moon away from the Earth? (1)

it is 250000 miles from Earth to the moon (i dont know km - but that is miles)

13.) How many moons has Venus, Neptune, Saturn (name two each) (5)

Venus has none. Neptune has two, Triton and Nereid and Saturn has 19 known ones, two of which are Titan and Rhia

14.) What year were the two moons of Mars discrovered and by whom?

in 1877 by American astronomer Asaph Hall

15.) which is the planet in our solar system that has the most moons? How many are there? (2)

Saturn with 19

The Moon - Homework

1.

Most people believe that a planet of the size of Mars hit the earth and almost destroyed the earth, destroying himself. It left behind the iron that entered the earth's core. It was then formed the moon.

2.

The craters on the moon are caused by small and big asteroids that hit the moon.

3.

The first man on the moon was Neil Armstrong. The secound man on the moon was Buzz Aldrin and the third man on the moon was Pete Conrad.

4.

"That's one small step for man but one giant leap for mankind."

5.

The moon takes 27.3 days to circle the earth.

6.

They are called "Maria"s because they look like oceans. Maria can be a girl's name, but it can also come from the word "mar" that means sea.

7.

A face, a man in the moon, and different other things.

8.

It happens during a new moon, when the moon passes through the Earth's shadow.

9.

The moon's gravition alters the tides.

10.

Luna 2 became the first manmade object to hit the moon.

11.

The latin name is Menses and the greek name is Mene.

12.

The Moon is 384403 kilometers (238857 miles) distant from the Earth.

13.

Venus doesn't have moons.
Neptune has two, being them: Triton and Nereid
Saturn currently has 47 known moons. When Cassini-Huygens was launched in 1997 there were only 18 known moons. Reanalysis of data from the Voyager 2 spacecraft has led to these further discoveries and recently another 12 minor moons were following studies at the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii. Two of them are Kiviuq and Paaliag

14.

They were discovered in 1877 by Asaph Hall.

At the same time the planet was destroyed and its remains were turned into debris and the debris collected together and formed the moon.

2.) Where do the craters on the surface of the moon come from? (1)Years and years ago, asteroids and meteors were said to have crashed into the moon and left large craters.

3.) Who was the first man on the moon? The second? And who was the third one who was circling the moon with a rocket? (2)Neil Armstrong, Buzz Alderin and the man in the rocket was Conrads.

4.) What were the first words spoken on the moon? (1)"That's one small step for man,one giant leap for mankind."

7.) Name three different things, people have thought to see when looking at the surface of the moon. (3)the face of a man, eyes of the goddess Athena, and in indian religion- the head of a howling wolf(sources for this part came from my Greek mythology book and the Indian speaks thing i did for school)

8.) When does a Lunar Eclipse happen? (1)when it is the time of a new moon

9.) What effect does the moonā€™s gravitation have on the earth? (1)it controls the pull of the tides of the oceans.

10.) What was the very first manmade object to land on the moon and when did it do so? (1)It was the Lunar 2 a space probe in 1959

11.) Give me the Latin and Greek names for the Moon. (1)Menses and Artemis/Menes

Homework on Moons

1.) How do people today think the moon was created? What did it leave behind when it came to be? (2)
When th earth was 'young' a planet roughtly the same size as Mars, collided with Earth. Because of the pseed which this planet hit, the planet was destroyed and came close to destroying Earth as well. Bascially because of the force from the planet being destroyed, its molten iron core continued to travel through earth. The crash sent tons of rocks and other stuff into orbit which then formed the moon.

2.) Where do the craters on the surface of the moon come from? (1)
The craters were though to have been made during a heavy bashing from Astroids.

3.) Who was the first man on the moon? The second? And who was the third one who was circling the moon with a rocket? (2)
Neil Armstrong, Edwin 'buzz' Aldrin and Michael Collins.

Homework on Moons

1.) How do people today think the moon was created? What did it leave behind when it came to be? (2)

Due to centrifugal force, a chunk of the Earth was sent into space, into orbit of the Earth, becoming the Moon. It left behind a crater that is probably the Pacific Basin.

2.) Where do the craters on the surface of the moon come from? (1)

Asteroids that hit the moon left a dent in it.

3.) Who was the first man on the moon? The second? And who was the third one who was circling the moon with a rocket? (2)

Neil Armstrong, Edwin ā€œBuzzā€ Aldrin and Michael Collins

4.) What were the first words spoken on the moon? (1)

Thatā€™s one small step for man but a giant leap for mankind

5.) How long does the moon take to circle the earth once? (1)

27.3 days approximately

6.) What are the dark parts of the moon called, and what does it mean? (1)

A dark part is called a mare (pl. maria). Maria is Latin for seas because that is what they were mistaken for.

7.) Name three different things, people have thought to see when looking at the surface of the moon. (3)

The Man on the Moon, A rabbit, I see a finger and a wolf as well.

8.) When does a Lunar Eclipse happen? (1)

When the Earth gets between the Moon and the Sun

9.) What effect does the moonā€™s gravitation have on the earth? (1)

It creates tides at different times as it pulls on the water mass.

10.) What was the very first manmade object to land on the moon and when did it do so? (1)

The Lunar II Space Probe in 1959

11.) Give me the Latin and Greek names for the Moon. (1)

Roman: Luna, Diana, Thracian Bendis. Greek: Selene, Phoebe, Artemis

12.) How many kilometers is the Moon away from the Earth? (1)

384 403 km (Semi-major axis)

13.) How many moons has Venus, Neptune, Saturn (name two each) (5)

Venus was thought to have a moon named Neith, but now that has been discredited and Venus has no natural satellites. Neptune has 13 known moons: some are Triton, Nereid, Proteus, Naiad, Thalassa, Despina, Galatea and Larissa. Saturn has countless number of moons as the tiny specks of dust that make up the rings are also technically moonsā€¦however, some of the main ones are: Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione, Rhea, Titan and Iapetus.

14.) What year were the two moons of Mars discrovered and by whom? (2)

In 1877 by Asaph Hall

15.) which is the planet in our solar system that has the most moons? How many are there? (2)

Jupiter has 63 known moons compared to Saturnā€™s 50

(Extra credit: 10 points if you can give me the names of all of them. the ones that have actual real names are enough)

1. How was Moon formed?
One theory is when our solar system was created, another planet smashed into the Earth, causing leaving iron in the earth's core (possibly why the earth has magnetic poles) and causing lots of debris to fly into space. The biggest 'bit' of this debris was the moon, which remained in orbit around the moon, whilst the other rocks are flying around space, as asteroids etc.
2. How did moon get craters?
Asteroids, meteorites and comets that have hit the moon ā€“ it has no atmosphere to burn up debris and rock, unlike the earth, which is relatively safe from most objects in space because of our atmosphere.
3. Who was 1st, 2nd and orbited around the Moon?
1 ā€“ Neil Armstrong
2 ā€“ Buzz Aldrin
3 ā€“ Micheal Collins
4. 1st words on moon?
That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.
5. Length of one orbit?
27.3 days
6. What are the dark bits called and what do they look like?
ā€œMariaā€, and they look like oceans.
7.
1 ā€“ That there is a man on/in the moon, or that the moon is a face (all children think that!)
2 ā€“ That the moon is made of cheese (probably because of Wallace and Gromit)
3 ā€“ A rabbit
8.
When there's a full moon and it passes in between the Earth and the sun, bocking out the sun.
9.
It 'controls' the tides as it affects masses of water.
10.
The Russian spacecraft Luna 2, in 1959
11.
latin: luna (source = The Aeneid, my set text for GCSE Latin ā€“ it has come in useful!)
greek: Selene (I searched for this, there was also Artemis)
12.
384, 403 or 238, 857 miles
13.
Venus ā€“ No moons!
Neptune ā€“ 13 known moons at the moment, the 2 biggest are Triton and Proteus
Saturn ā€“ At the moment, 47, 2 first discovered ā€“ Titus, Iapetus
14.
Asaph Hall discovered them in 1877, and called them Phobos and Deimos
15.
Jupiter has 63 moons, 38 named

Homework

THE MOON

1. The scientific explanation more popular is that a planet of approximately the size of Mars hit against the earth and almost destroyed it, finishing itself after. It left behind an iron that entered the earth's core. It formed the moon.

2. They are caused by all sizes asteroids that hit the moon.

3. The 1st was Neil Armstrong. The 2nd man on the moon was Buzz Aldrin and the 3rd was Pete Conrad.

4. "That's one small step for man but one giant leap for mankind"

5. 27.3 days.

6. Theyā€™re called "Maria" because they look like oceans.

7. The man in the moon, something like a face and other stuff.

8. It happens when the moon passes through the Earth's shadow, during a new moon.

9. Its gravitation alters the tides.

10. The first manmade object to hit the moon was Luna 2.

11. The Greek name is Mene and the Latin name is Menses and.

12. It is 238857 miles (384403 km) distant from the Earth.

13. Venus doesn't have moons.

Neptune has two, and they are: Triton and Nereid

Saturn has 46 known moons. Two of them are Pandora and Skathi

14. In 1877 by Asaph Hall.

15. Jupiter, who has 63 known moons.

Homework on Moons

1.) How do people today think the moon was created? What did it leave behind when it came to be? (2)

People today believe that the moon and Earth formed around the same time when a big chunk of rock forming Earth hit Earth and threw off a big piece, and this piece became the Moon.

2.) Where do the craters on the surface of the moon come from? (1)

The craters come from meteors that hit the surface.

3.) Who was the first man on the moon? The second? And who was the third one who was circling the moon with a rocket? (2)

1st-Neil Armstrong
2nd-Edwin ā€œBuzzā€ Aldrin
3rd-Pete Conrad

4.) What were the first words spoken on the moon? (1)
ā€œThis is one small step for man, one giant leap for mankindā€

5.) How long does the moon take to circle the earth once? (1)

29days

6.) What are the dark parts of the moon called, and what does it mean? (1)

ā€œdark sideā€ or ā€œunknownā€ or ā€œhiddenā€

7.) Name three different things, people have thought to see when looking at the surface of the moon. (3)

1)man in the moon
2)cheese
3) another man

8.) When does a Lunar Eclipse happen? (1)

The Lunar Eclipse happens when there is a new moon and it comes over the sun. During a lunar eclipse, Earth blocks the sun's light that normally lights up the moon. Since we are standing on Earth, what we see is that the moon gets dark. Other kinds of eclipses happen too.

9.) What effect does the moonā€™s gravitation have on the earth? (1)

It effects the Spring and Leap Tides.

10.) What was the very first manmade object to land on the moon and when did it do so? (1)

Lunar 2 inā€¦I think 1960ā€¦or 1959

11.) Give me the Latin and Greek names for the Moon. (1)

Latin- Luna
Greek- Selene

12.) How many kilometers is the Moon away from the Earth? (1)

I think it is 384,413 kilometersā€¦

13.) How many moons has Venus, Neptune, Saturn (name two each) (5)

Venus has none, Saturn has 18 and Neputune has 8.

14.) What year were the two moons of Mars discrovered and by whom? (2)

1610 through a telescope by Italian astronomer Cassani

15.) which is the planet in our solar system that has the most moons? How many are there? (2)
(Extra credit: 10 points if you can give me the names of all of them. the ones that have actual real names are enough)

There are 137 moons as of April 2005. Jupiter has the most moons with 60 of them.

1.) How do people today think the moon was created? What did it leave behind when it came to be? (2)

People think the Moon was created when Earth was very young. They think that a large, Mars-size object collided with the Earth and the resulting debris became the Moon. Some say that the impact left behind a large ocean basin, possibly the Pacific.

2.) Where do the craters on the surface of the moon come from? (1)

The craters come from the moon being bombarded with meteors or space rocks over millions of years.

3.) Who was the first man on the moon? The second? And who was the third one who was circling the moon with a rocket? (2)

The first man to walk on the moon was Neil Armstrong. The second was Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin. The third man in the rocket was Michael Collins.

4.) What were the first words spoken on the moon? (1)

"One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind"- Neil Armstrong

5.) How long does the moon take to circle the earth once? (1)

The Moon takes about 27.3 days to circle the Earth once.

6.) What are the dark parts of the moon called, and what does it mean? (1)

They are called "maria", Latin for "seas" because ancient astronomers believed that the dark parts were actually water-filled seas.

7.) Name three different things, people have thought to see when looking at the surface of the moon. (3)

They think that they see a "man in the moon", they think it is made of cheese, or they what looks like a face made out of the Moon's craters.

8.) When does a Lunar Eclipse happen? (1)

A Lunar eclipse happens during the full moon phase. It is when the Sun, Earth, and Moon line up in that order.

9.) What effect does the moon’s gravitation have on the earth? (1)

The moon cause the pull and push of water tides here on Earth.

10.) What was the very first manmade object to land on the moon and when did it do so? (1)

The Soviet Union's Luna 2 was the first man-made object to land on the moon on September 14, 1959.

11.) Give me the Latin and Greek names for the Moon. (1)

Latin- Luna
Greek- Selene

12.) How many kilometers is the Moon away from the Earth? (1)

384,403 kilometers away on average

13.) How many moons has Venus, Neptune, Saturn (name two each) (5)

Venus has no moons. Neptune has 13 moons- two of which are Triton and Naiad. Saturn has 19 moons- two of which are Titan and Rhea.

14.) What year were the two moons of Mars discrovered and by whom? (2)

1877 by Asaph Hall
