| 2: Write an essay on any topic Halloween related.Minimum 500 words. 500 HP per essay. Jack of the Lantern While the famous and widely loved tradition of carving both silly and spooky faces into pumpkins, not many people in today’s world know where and why it all started. There are, in fact many stories found among folklore around the world, my favorite is that of the Irishman, “Stingy Jack”. Even within his story, there seem to be different variations, but as always I have a favorite. As the story goes, Stingy Jack, the drunkard of a small Irish village was known throughout the land as a manipulative and deceiving man. He became so well known for his treacherous ways, that the devil himself heard of all of Jack’s evil. The devil then sought out Jack, out of envy of the rumors, to see if this man lived up to his despicable reputation. True to character, Jack wandered the cool cobblestone through the countryside on a dark night when he came upon a body in his path. When Jack got closer, he realized that it had the face of the devil. Just before Jack’s soul was collected and dragged back to hell, he made single request: he asked the devil to let him have one last drink. Finding no harm in a dying man’s last wishes, the devil agreed and took Jack to a local pub. After getting drunk as a skunk, Jack asked the devil to pay the tab on all the ale he had just consumed. Jack and his silver tongue convinced the devil to turn himself into a silver coin, in which to pay the bartender. After doing so, Jack took the coin and stuck it into his pocket, where he had a small wooden crucifix. The presence of the cross stopped the devil from being able to return to his true form. Jack then struck a deal with the devil: In exchange for the devil’s freedom, Jack’s soul was to be spared for an additional 10 years. The devil agreed to the terms and left Jack to his drunken and evil antics for the time that was given to him. However, after the ten years had passed, Jack found that he was still not ready for eternal damnation. In his scheming ways, he asked the devil if he would be allowed one apple to feed his starving belly. The devil again, agreed foolishly and went up the branches of a nearby tree to fetch an apple for Jack. As he was doing this, Jack surrounded the base of the tree with crucifixes. As before, Jack made a demand before he released the devil. Once the devil agreed to never take Jack’s soul into hell, he was set free. The lifestyle that Jack lived was unstable and unhealthy at the very least, and it eventually took its toll on him. As Jack’s soul departed towards heaven, he was stopped at the gates of St. Peter. He was told that he had lead a life full of sin, deceit, and drinking and could not be allowed into heaven. Jack then turned away and arrived at the gates of Hell and begged to be taken to the underworld. The devil, finally got his revenge as he refused Jack’s entry. The devil then sent Jack away with coals and a hollowed turnip to warn others of a life that doomed him to forever roam the realm between good and evil, becoming known as “Jack of the Lantern”, and later “Jack-o’-lantern”. Through the story of Stingy Jack, the hollowed out turnips became a way of protecting your home against the undead. It was believed that the light that shined through could ward away the undead and even identify vampires. In today's world we use Jack-o-lanterns as decoration, but it’s easy to see from this story how they first became popular. Word Count: 625 Elizabeth Bathory When you think of Halloween, what comes to mind? Ghouls, vampires, zombies, and all things that go bump in the night. While most people concentrate on the clichéd supernatural, I always finding myself thinking of historical figures whose horrible lives are something that I find represent Halloween in the truest form possible. Elizabeth Bathory is one of the many superb real life examples of the supernatural. Elizabeth was born a countess from a noble family in the Kingdom of Hungary in 1560. At the age of only eleven, she was engaged to Ferenc Nadasdy. In 1575, at the age of fourteen, the political arrangement was solidified by the two joining in matrimony. As a wedding gift Nadasdy gave Bathory his home, Csejte Castle, which was surrounded by a village and agricultural lands. In 1578, Nadasdy became the chief commander of the Hungarian troops in the war against the Ottomans. With her husband off at war, Elizabeth became responsible for all of the business affairs and the estates. Being a lady of great status and knowledge, Bathory had the perfect excuse to get away with what she did but her reasoning behind the actions were horrific. Things began turning dark for Elizabeth after her husband died. She was faced with the inevitability of death. Her mind slowly began to slip from the grasp in reality. She lured young girls to her castle, with the promise of becoming well-paid maidservants. Later, she brought in the daughters of lesser gentry under the false impression that they were to learn etiquette. Eventually, it is said that she gave up trying to be discreet and began having young girls abducted for her bizarre and morbid purposes. While the everything that we know of Elizabeth’s crimes are through testimony in court, the appalling actions were in the plenty. She was known for giving severe beatings and burning or cutting of the hands. She would also freeze and starve the girls to death. But even that doesn’t overshadow the biting of flesh from the faces, arms, and other body parts of the young and innocent girls that she lured to her homes. As her mind continued to slip further and further away from reality, she even hung the bodies and bled them out over a bath tub. It’s believed that she bathed in the blood of virgins in order to maintain her youth and beauty. She used her high social status to her advantage and traveled between 5 different locations in which she had homes to try stop suspicion from growing even more. Eventually it seemed as though she gave up on trying to hide any of what was happening. It is believed that Elizabeth even kept a diary full of the names of those lost souls that she had stolen. While the diary was never found, it is believed to have over six hundred fifty names. With that being said, it is easy to see how this story has become infamous. And that alone was her downfall. After rumors of what had been happening traveled throughout the surrounding lands, it became clear that something needed to be done. Not wanting to risk disgracing an entire noble family of great status, the King never put Bathory on trial. Instead her family created a strict house arrest rule, and even went far enough to brick her into a small suite, with only enough space for ventilation and to get food to her. Completely cut off from the outside world, it didn’t take long before she died. Her story, however, was destined to live on forever. She has been labeled the most prolific female serial killer in history. She is remembered as the “Blood Countess”. Elizabeth Bathory was as close to a real life vampire as it gets. | Write a Halloween one shot. Minimum 500 words. | 500 per essay |
Clafin stepped outside of the diner, pulling her sweater closer to herself as an icy rush of October air bit at her skin. As she turned her attention away from the door, fear overcame her. A full moon illuminated the deserted streets of her new home. Her heart began to race as her hand instinctually grabbed at the small silver locket that lay around her neck, which contained a small dose of vervain oil within it. She knew it was silly to believe in all of the folklore that her grandmother had always warned her of, especially considering the deterioration of Nana’s mind towards the end, but part of her still believed that there were supernatural beings all around her. Inhaling deeply, Clafin shook her head and smiled to herself. “Don’t be daft. Werewolves don’t exist,” she said to herself aloud, with the sole purpose of calming her own nerves. Her legs finally released from the fear and allowed the young woman to make her way through the town square. She still had nearly three miles to walk before she was home, and she was now mentally kicking herself for not driving or riding her bike to work. Trying to calm the fast pace of her own beating heart, Clafin pulled out her iPhone and headphones from her purse. As she looked down, she realized that it was Halloween. She looked up sharply to view her surroundings and was shocked to see that there weren’t any kids wondering around in elaborate costumes asking neighbors for treats. A chill rushed down her spine as she realized that something must be wrong. She started to run, as the terror she felt in her whole body became overpowering. She heard a scream in the distance and stopped in her tracks. Trying to decide if she should help whoever it was that had screamed, or help herself by reaching her own home. She was torn away from her inner turmoil by someone roughly knocking her to the ground. Darkness consumed Clafin’s mind as she prepared herself for the worst possible outcomes. She felt a hand, a human hand, slap down upon her mouth, to keep her from screaming. She tried to catch a glimpse of the attacker, when she realized it being attacked at all. She was being saved. Clafin opened her eyes to see a dark figure crouching before her in a protective stance. As she tried to calm herself down, she managed to find words to speak, “What was th-“ she was cut off by a vicous snarl. She began laughing to herself, half in shock, as she realized that it was the man before her that the beastly sound had come from. And then she saw it.Snarling savagely as blood dripped from its mouth, a huge beast slowly made its way towards the pair that had no salvation or safe haven from the glow of the moon. She could feel her blood rising as panic took over once again. It lunged forward and darkness consumed everything… “HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM EVERYBODY AT Z100! Now to Doug with the traffic report.” Clafin awoke with a start, breathing heavily, and covered in sweat before she realized that it had all been a dream. Still, she picked up her phone to call in to work…just in case. | |
