| Welcome, to the Hogwarts Experience! We are so glad to have you here with us, and in order to make your life easier (as we know the site is a bit overwhelming at first), we'll be giving you a little tour of the site to help you figure out how everything works on the site. Just remember, never tickle a Purple Hippo!
Getting Started
- Getting Sorted:
First things first, it's time for you to step into the Plataform 9/3 Quarters, board the train to the Hogwarts Experience and be sorted into your house! Sorting is a very important step of your journey, as the House you are sorted into will become your family as you traverse to win the House Cup together. To be entered for Sorting, you'll need to go to the Sorting Request Post. While I've provided a link for you, it's important that you're able to find it yourself as well. Take time to explore the site Now that you're in the mighty presence of the Sorting Hat, you may leave a little message to the Hat requesting sorting by pressing the "Add Reply" button in the top left hand corner of the forum. There are two ways of being sorted: 1 - Randomly. You simply ask the Sorting Hat to sort you to either house. In this option, please DO NOT REQUEST A SPECIFIC HOUSE. Sorting is done at random and ensures that each House has an equal number of members, so requests are not taken into account. 2 - Ask to be sorted into your POTTERMORE HOUSE. Simply request this option state your username in Pottermore and your house so it can be verified. Sortings are done on Thursdays and Sundays so check back to see what House you've been placed in, but remember, you do not need to wait to be assigned a House in order to complete House Point Earning events! When you're Sorting has been completed, your House assignment can be found in the Sorting List.
- Getting a Vault:
Getting a vault is not mandatory but it's a nice thing to have if you want to keep track of all your trophies, badges, exams, chocolate frog cards, etc. It's also where your gold will be stored if you get a staffing position. You can get your vault in the Gringotts Wizarding Bank.

Academic Activities
- Classes:
Here at HE we're proud to provide an extensive curriculum of classes that you won't see anywhere! Most classes can earn you, generally, a total of 100 points per assignment and are graded by the current professor. Some classes might be divided by levels and upper levels are worse more points. Each professor has put up their own sticky notes and howlers that give specific information on their grading process and how each individual class words, so be sure that you read through those before completing anything. The harder the class, the more points you’ll earn for completing it. Assignments are always open, and you do not need to sign up, or even be sorted yet, in order to complete them. As soon as you have been sorted, the points will be added to your House. Anyone can do any class, except for Dark Arts Studies, which you need to be over seventeen to enter. All the professors are always willing to answer any questions you have, so feel free to send them a private message by clicking that owl we talked about underneath their posts. Each class also has a sub-forum for old classes, which can no longer be completed, but if you’re interested to see what other assignments there have been, you may of course look through there. Here is a list the classes available in the Hogwarts Experience (though we think it will be more fun if you explore the castle to try and find where they are ):Some classes also have special forums dedicated to extra studies in a certain area, with special activities that are worth more points. Below is a list of all the special forums by subject.
- Essays:
Essays are useful if you fail your exams or simply if you don't want to take. You can make a certain amount of essays to replace the exams you'd need to move up a year. Essays must relate back to a specific class. There are several levels (according to how many words an essay has) and rules, make sure you read them before posting an essay, otherwise you might be writing for nothing. The Library is located on the Third Floor. The restricted section though is one the Fourth Floor and you'll only be able to see it after you've been approved to take Dark Arts Classes.
- Exams:
As a first Year you can sign to take your Wand Exam, but as you move up in years you'll be able to sign up to for other exciting exams. All exams have multiple parts to complete that can be challenging but are quite rewarding, earning you a certificate and HousePoints. You can sign up in the Examinations Office, on the Towers Floor. The exams are as follows: Wand Examinations (first year), Apparition Examination (second year), Animagus Exam (third year), Disillusionment Exams (fifth year), OWL Exams (fourth year), and soon, Occlumency/Legilimency (sixth year), Patronus Exams (fourth year) and NEWTs (sevnth year). In the Examinations Office, each of these exams has a separate thread devoted to signing up, so when you reach the required year, be sure you come back to sign up. Once accepted, the Headmaster will give you permission to access the exams and you'll have to find where they are. - Badges:
The Badge Burrow The Badge Burrow is a great place for earning House Points. Also, Badges are another requirement to move up a year. Here, you complete different badges, many of which have different levels for different house points). In the main forum, there are many threads and Howlers on how the Badge Burrow works that you should look over carefully, as well as information on gold, silver, and bronze placements (for the number of badges completed in a term), and threads for questions, suggestions, and instructions on how to print screen as well as a list of all the Badges available to earn. There are several sub-forums in the Burrow: The Badge Display Case Upon earning a badge, each member gets a thread of their own where their badges are placed under your username. As you watch your number of badges pile up, this is the perfect place to stare at all your lovely achievements. Badge Levels There are five levels to badges: level one contains the easiest, while level five contains the hardest. You must begin in Level One with the Badge Member Badge before any other badges can be earned (linked below). After completing the Member Badge, you are free to work on any badge that interests you. Levels two through five often require the badge below it in order to earn it. For example, the level one Designer Badge must be completed before you may earn the Level Two Advanced Fashion Designer Badge. Each badge has its own requirements, so read the instructions carefully, and, like always, feel free to contact the staff if you have any questions or concerns. Burrow Backyard This subforum is for members who may need a thread to plan a event or post various links regarding the badge they are attempting to earn. This is mainly for Hand Badges, which require ideas about spirit week, or party badges that ask for detail planning. Feel free to message a staff member if you’re not sure if your badge needs a separate thread.
Extra-curricular Activities
- Events:
The Great Halll holds all the major events throughout the year, so be sure to check this forum occasionally to be sure your not missing anything exciting. These events are great ways to earn lots of house points, and all you have to do to participate is sign-up. This forum holds various sign-ups for events and sub-forums for past events which you can look through as well as winners of the events. The Event forum is where all the holiday events, for Christmas and Halloween, are placed, and hold many challenges to be completed, so pay special attention to this forum around the holidays!
- Quidditch:
When the Quidditch tournament is being held (is currently on hiatus), it is played in a role playing form, and points are awarded based on how well you interact with others, not on which team necessarily wins. In this forum, there are threads on how the games run and sub-forums dedicated to past games, which you can read through as examples. You do not have to be on a House team in order to participate, as there are always threads for cheering on your team in the stands. - Tournaments:
Please note that not all tournaments are open at all times, it depends on how many people are active and willing to participate. The possible tournaments that HE can have are: - Duelling:
A Dueling Tournament is where members use role playing to duel each other. There's a special forum for it that contains information on the rules to dueling, sign-ups, a thread for questions, a guide to dueling, past winners, and a sub-forum for past duels if you’d like to look at some examples. By passing exams, some member’s have an advantage over others with the advantage of apparition and becoming an Animagus.
- Debates:
In the Debate and Discussion Classroom you can sign up to be placed on a Debate team, where you’re given a topic and a side to debate and discuss. Points are awarded based on how solid the argument is. This forum contains threads to sign-up, information on how the point system works, and places to ask questions or give suggestions. There is also a sub-forum that holds past debates.
- Graphics:
The Graphics Forum can hold two tournaments, one for general graphics of all types and sizes and one specific for avatars only.
- Writing:
The Hogwarts Quill forum can hold two tournaments, one for general writing of all types and one specific for drabbles. This forum has Howlers and post-its with sign-ups for the two tournaments held there (Writing and Drabbles) with specific information on how to participate as well as past winners of these tournaments. You do not have to wait to be added to a list of participants in order to begin working on the tournament and sending submissions in. You can even review fics that other members have written to earn housepoints! There is a sub-forum for completed tournaments and challenges that can be seen as examples.
- Art:
In the Artist Alley, for the more artsy people, we also hold an Arts tournament for those who prefer more hands-on art than what's provided in the digital world.
- Photography:
There's a place for a photography tournament too at HE in Photography corner.
- Games:
In the Games Garden you can find a tournament to show off your gaming skills!
- Challenges:
In the Challenge Chamber, there's quite a few fun challenges to be completed. You can also suggest classes and see past winners as well. We would like to highlight the monthly Trivia Challenge which you can also access directly through one of our side widgets. Suggested Threads: FunTrivia Ongoing Daily Quiz TournamentFrom times to times challenges can also appear in the Graphics Forum, the Hogwarts Quill Forum, the Photography Corner, the Artist Alley and the Games Garden.
- Chocolate Frog Cards Den:
At HE we provided you with the chance to collect your own Chocolate Frog Cards! To do that you simply need to solve the Riddles in the Chocolate Frog Cards Den. Once you answer the riddle correctly you'll be directed to the image of the card. Don't forget do add it to your vault
- Hall of Records:
We love to award members for the hours of hard work they put into various activities around the site, and the Hall of Records is one of those ways. There are currently eight records you can hold: biggest tournament participant, most stories written record, most challenges accomplished record, student-a-holic-record (most classes), ultra-student-a-holic award (most exams), teachers’-pet-a-holic record (most essays), graphics-a-holic record, and perfect-wannabe record (most welcoming to new members like yourself) and art-a-holic (most art pieces). To be in the running for these records, you’ll need to give specific examples to prove you’ve done all of the item. For example, if you are trying to win the Ultra-Student-a-Holic record, you’d need to post links to each of the exams you completed this term.
- Pensieve:
He's very own newspaper is called "Penseive". You can find sign-up for it in the Notice Board where you'll have a blast and also win plenty of HousePoints!
Useful Info
- Notice Board:
The Notice Board is one of the best forums to check on a regular basis. It contains information on a variety of things such as:
- staff changes and staff job openings
- ways to help out and promote the site
- double accounts
- ways to earn housepoints
- a place to post if you will be going away for a while and won’t be able to post
- a sign-up for the Hogwarts Pensieve, the HE newspaper, as well as the latest editions
- a place to post when you vote for HE on topsites. It also contains a thread that shows whose receiving award points and for what achievements
- term announcements (which is viewable in every forum) and updated every time a new event, staff, or tournament is opened, among other things
The Notice Board also contains several sub-forums:. - Clock Tower:
Are you having a problem around the site that you just can’t figure out? Did the FAQ fail to answer your question? Have no fear! Simply stop by the Clock Tower, where you can ask any questions or concerns you have about the site for other members to answers. You should see a sub-forum marked “Recovery”. Be sure to scroll through the threads in there first, as that’s where answered questions are placed, and one may contain the answer you’re looking for. If you don’t see your question in there, feel free to start a new topic and someone will attempt to help you. If you found someone’s answer particularly helpful, be sure to give them that thumbs up to thank them!
- Bell Tower:
Here at HE, we’re always looking to make the site even better, and your suggestions are always taken seriously and considered. Come in to the Bell Tower to voice your suggestion, but be sure to look over what suggestions have already been made to be sure yours hasn’t already been suggested and denied by someone else. Also, be sure to make your suggestion as a poll (see “Adding a Poll”) so that it can be voted on by members to see popularity.
- Awards:
This forum, which is not currently active, members vote on a series of awards with their peers to determine everything from who’s the most helpful to most likely to earn a pet dragon. You may also make suggestions for new awards in this forum.
- Floot Network:
Now leaving the Notice Board, let’s take a look at the Floo Network. The Floo Network gives you the opportunity to travel to various places outside of HE that are still part of us, such as the Hogwarts Quill (our site dedicated to stories and fanfictions) and our different chatrooms. There are also links to our timeline, yearbook, and daily trivia which are always worth taking a look at.
- Hogwarts Experience Cups Winners:
This forum is dedicated to the different awards and cups that users have won over the years, from student of the month to certificates of passing exams and badges. On the outside of the forum (the main page), you can click on six different buttons that will lead you to different rooms that contain those awards and certificates: Special Trophies (Special Services to the School), Trophy Case (for House and Quidditch Cup Winners), HE Apparition Certificate Room, Animagus Certificates, HE Awards (that the site has won), and Member Awards (Student of the Month).
- HousePoints Hourglasses:
The Housepoints forum is one of the most important forums, filled with information regarding where your House stands in the race for the House Cup. You can find post-it notes with information regarding how many award points you receive for being the top house point winner, threads for past winners, and individual House threads that are updated to show how many points your House has in total, as well as who is earning those points and how many they’re receiving. Don’t worry if all of your points aren’t there: the threads are updated every few months, so just because a professor has graded an assignment you’ve completed, it does not necessarily mean that they have been added to the total. The Purple Elf House is a thread for our Former Head Mistress to keep track of any points she earns throughout the term, which are often dispersed throughout the Houses or to different members: in the overall scheme of things, this is not something you need to be concerned about.
- The Hogwarts Experience Community:
This form is the best place to interact with other members, with Howlers and Post it notes for saying happy birthday, talking in the Common Room, signing into the chatroom, posting pictures, among many other things. There are also many pages of threads with general discussions that are very fun to get involved in, so take a peek through, and feel free to open any threads that you feel should be (again, just be sure it hasn’t already been opened).
