| noticed something that I couldn't explain...
When Dumbledore and Harry enter the pensieve to discover more about Lord Voldemort, it appears that Dumbledore has viewed these memories before (seems logical, as he knows when to leave and where to go). Afterward, he gives analysis to Harry about what they have seen.
My question is, during the the first memory with Bob Ogden, and later, Morfin's true memory of Voldemort visiting him at his home, the majority of spoken word occurs in Parseltongue. Can Dumbledore speak and understand it as well? If so, shouldn't he have shared that with Harry? And if he can't, why wouldn't he ask Harry what was said, instead of providing expert and correct analysis, particularly with the Morfin memory?
It is possible that Dumbledore made assumptions about what was said through body language and tone of voice, but I would think that he'd want those confirmed.
It doesn't strike me that there would be a "Parseltongue to English Dictionary"....

| I think he knows Parceltongue. Either that or he had Morphin translate it for him before he died. Dumbledore was very powerful and I am sure that he knew the language if it a language that can be learned. | |

| Yes, I think he learned paserltongue like he learned mermish. But i think he understands it. I think the gift part is speaking it not understanding it. | |

| OK Dumbedore isn't a perseltongue. He told Harry there are only a few! Dumbledore is great at learning things, which means he learned it, not botn with the ability to understand it at birth. Harry had that talent for a while. | |

| i thought about that and i think he might be..... i also dont think it can be learned i think its just something your born with. Also thinking about this even more i came to the conclusion that..... dont laugh...... but he might be related to slytherin. After all i think hes a pure blood and like many people said that most pure blood's were related as to why so many of them married muggles. So maybe hes related to slytherin and he got that gift. | |

| Yeah. I think DUmbledore visited Morfin in Azkaban to get the memory and by the time he realized it proved he was innocent he had died. | |

| What I dont understand is why everyone insists that he got Morfin to tell him what they said. What my question is, can parstletongue be learned? I do not believe that Dumbledore is a Parstlemouth- its a good thing to think about but im really not sure if I could believe that he's "related to a slytherin" or anything of that sort. If it can be learned I could by that answer. Would Morfin honestly know everything that was said in the memory? Unless he was shown it by dumbledore...
And Stephy, did all the Gaunts die before (Bob i think his name was) passed away and before Dumbledore got the memory?

| I'm not entirely certain Erika. Maybe, maybe not..
But I did run into JK's explanation on the web about this ages ago. She said that Dumbledore was a brilliant man who knew many languages implying that he did learn Parseltongue.

| According to wiki:
"Parseltongue is, when spoken, a hissing sound, like how snakes hiss; as such, normal people cannot understand it. An exception to this was Albus Dumbledore, who though not a Parselmouth, was able to understand the language, presumably through study."
But I don't know if he can talk back to snakes...maybe just understand them?
