Hehe...the age old question...Is Snape a goody or a baddy?
Personally, I have no clue. I don't know if he is on the good side, the bad side, if he killed Dumbledore as some sort of secret plan or if he is just plain evil.
I do, however think that he is on his own side...Snape does whatever is best for Snape, IMO.
So what are your thoughts?

| It is a bit of a cheat to answer this after the release of the 7th book (I voted 'good'), but I missed the original discussion and I have always had an opinion on this matter!
As a die hard fan of the show '24', I knew from the first time Harry questions Snape's loyalties that Snape was against Voldemort's agenda. "I'm sorry; how does '24' relate to Snape?" Like this:
The first couple of seasons of '24' drive home the point that Jack Bauer will go to extreme lengths to complete the mission at hand. Not only Jack, but other individuals with agendas on the show. I cannot even begin to count how many times this show made me go "WTF?!". The stuff that Jack does to get done what needs to be done is nothing short of amazing, in the terrifying sense of the word.
So exposure to Jack and his methods left me completely open to the fact that Snape would indeed be capable of going to extraordinary measures to help thwart Voldemort's plans. And by extraordinary, I mean that he would do whatever it took to appear authentic to Voldemort. Whatever. It. Took. JK Rowling may not mind that HP gets relegated to the Children's and YA sections, but Snape's plotline is just one reason of many that it bothers me. Like BtVS, we cannot truly appreciate the lenths Snape goes to to maintain his cover due to the juvenilized method of delivery (can you imagine BtVS on HBO?). Me relating him to Jack Bauer is one way I put this into perspective for myself and it's why I was not surprised that Harry calls him one of the bravest men he ever knew.
And I think it would be more appropriate if the poll asked if Snape is truly a member of the Order of the Pheonix (yes!) or truly a Death Eater.
In closing, while I never questioned Snape's loyalities, that he is in love with Lily Potter took me by COMPLETE surprise.

| I knew he was on the good side the whole time! I never thought he was evil. He is a jerk, yes, but I knew he wasn't evil. I also think that he is one of the best written double agents in literature. | |

| I always went back and forth with him...while I always thought he was a jerk who held insane grudges and was a rather bitter man, he was ultimatley one of the most admirable people in the series with his devotion to Lily and how brave he was to perform such dangerous tasks for Dumbledore. However, I wouldn't call him completley good....he's got a dark side to him with his grudges and bitter attitude. Still, I agree, he's an awesome double agent. | |
