| Why did the wizards and witches agree to use a broom for transportation? Many wizards only think of brooms as a way of getting around or playing qudditch on but they never really sat back and thought about why we are flying around on brooms instead of a bed or a carpet. The main reason is because it is easy to hide from the muggles. If a muggle saw it they would think it was used for cleaning houses, not flying over to work. It is also easy to carry around and it does not cost much just to bewitch it to fly. But when the game of qudditch came around companies were trying to out do one another and make the better broom resulting in the many different kinds. There are many brooms made just for traveling and brooms made for speed. There is one to enjoy a flight and one to make quick turns. Yes I’m talking about the brooms ranging from the first one made, the Oakshaft 79, to the newest and fastest the Firebolt. As some know the Oakshaft 79 was the first broom made by Elias Grimstone. It was made out of oak and made to be able to withstand strong gusts of wind but it never was the ideal broom for qudditch because it couldn’t turn too well when flying at its top speed. This broom is famous for the first Atlantic broom crossing when it was flown by Jocunda Sykes in 1935. Then in 1901 the Glady Boothby created the Moontrimmer. It was made out of ash and was a great broom for qudditch at the time. It could fly higher than the other brooms but because of there being only one man to make all of the brooms he didn’t make enough for all who wanted one. Then in that same year Leonard Jewkes came out with the Silver Arrow. This broom was faster than the Moontrimmer but like the Moontrimmer Jewkes couldn’t make enough to meet the demand for the broom. In 1926 the Ollerton brothers started the Cleansweep Broom Company and came out with the Cleansweep One. They were able to produce the brooms in vast amounts unlike Boothby and Jewkes. They were made just for qudditch being able to turn unlike the others. But three years later Randolph Keitch and Basil Horton started the Comet Trading Company and started to make the Comet 140. The broom was called this because that was the number of brooms they tested before coming to this one. This broom had the braking charm and made qudditch teams wanted this broom instead of the Cleansweep. This started a competition between the two companies and they came out with the Cleansweep Two (1934), Cleansweep Three (1937) and the Comet 180 (1938). In 1940 Ellerby and Spudmore started the Black Forest company and manufactured the Tinderblast. Still this broom wasn’t as good as the Cleansweeps or the Comets. Then In 1952 they came out with the Swiftstick that was faster than the Swiftstick but still not good enough for to play qudditch because it lost power in ascent. Later on Universal Brooms Ltd. came out with the ShootingStar. It was cheap but it lost speed and height as it aged so the makers were forced to go out of business in 1978. Nimbus Racing Broom Company came out with the Nimbus 1000 in 1955. It was the fastest and capable of making sharp turns and became the broom the professionals used. In 1990 the Twigger 90 was introduced. Flyte and Bactor, the manufactures, had meant for it to replace the Nimbus because it had extra stuff added on it and id didn’t warp at high speed. Only the rich bought it because of how much money it cost and also because of the fact that it wasn’t really meant for qudditch. Then the most newest broom to come out was the Firebolt. It was the fastest, could fly at high altitudes and turn as if by thought and not touch hit the markets. Used mostly by professionals because it was the most reliable and did performed just right for the game of qudditch. After many years the wizards and witches went from the only transportation was by Appariting or by taking ships or cars to get to where you wanted to flying around on brooms. Because we choose the broom and not the carpet or the bed we are able to hide the fact that we can fly and quickly get around. Now that you read this essay I hope that yo have a better understanding on why we use brooms and the different types of brooms.
