| We were discussing the death penalty (or capital punishment) the other day and I was wondering what people's views on this are.
Personally I am totally against it all no matter what a person has done

| In some ways I am for it. For captial punishment. I think that teachers have pretty much lost all control of the children in class. They get stuff thrown at them etc. In a few years time that will become even worse. I think they should bring back the cane etc so as to make children more well behaved in class. Although that behaviour will be made through violence and fear I still think that it should be back. I also think that people should get longer prison sentences. for things such as murder or mass murder. I think that the death penatly should be brought back for that reason. " And eye for an eye" | |

| I'm confused right now.. In America, I'm very sure that a life sentanc eis exactly that, you're in jail until you die. As for the death penalty. I am totally against it. Same iwth corporal punishment. Think of it this way. To teach a child not to hit, you hit them. Does that make sense. So in a way, your teaching society not to kill by killing people. That doesn't make sense to me. Maybe it's because I was never hit as a little kid or ever by a parent or authority figure that I don't see the point of it, but I don't like it. My parent's don't beleive in spanking and I will never spank my children when I have some. Also, schools in America at least, will probably never be ble to hit kids again because paren't would be so outraged that there child was hit. My parent's would be flipping out. | |

| I'm against the death penalty, but I agree that life should mean life.
Here in England, someone could get a life sentence, but it doesn't mean they're in prison for life...it's a certain number of years, which could then be cut down for things like good behaviour.
I think if someone has done something bad enough to warrant a life sentence, then they should be in prison for the rest of their life, not just a few years.

| I think it's around 20 years in Finland too, but then they are on thin ice, so to speak. One small crime and they're back again. Usually, they're just so shocked about how much life has changed in 20+ years, so they just tick off and do a crime - just to get back in. It's crazy, I know, but we talked about this in pyshology, so I know xD | |

| I agree - those who commit crimes deserving of the death penalty should be given a life sentence and it to mean 'life' as in never to return to the real world.
At the moment I have heard that people are being let out of prisons on a tag as prisons are getting too crowded and this is stupidity. Those who have life should never be allowed out.

| *Sensitve issues involved*
I may get a lot of people upset at me by this but I'm not against the death penalty and I'll give you my views on why.
I believe that there are those who should be executed. I'm not a completely heartless person, but I do believe that this kind of punishment is an acceptable way of dealing with certain criminals. I believe that the death penalty should be used on child molestors and pedophiles. I have absolutely no sympathy for those people.
Sexual crimes such as these and rape should have a death penalty because in my opinion, there is NO way that someone who's repeatedly done things like that; could or would ever change and function in a normal society.
With violence, there are possibilites in which a person can go through counseling, therapy, and psychiatric help for their anger problems. They learn to deal with anger in different ways and sometimes(not all) they are able to become better people.
But with Sex crimes; especially those involving children; my belief is that these people are too far gone in the head for help. People who lust after little kids like that never change. They may try but it is an addiction for them. Once they do it, they keep doing it; like drugs.
Yes, I am rather biased as I was a victim of a sex crime, also I'm a mother, but I am also trying to look at it from a realistic view.
The death penalty should be used on 'those who can not be helped'.
In a case study, I'd be willing to bet that more violent people are able to change than those who committed sex crimes.
I'll stop there before I keep on rambling as I know this is a touchy subject for us. I'm not trying to offend anyone here, I'm simply stating my views and feelings on this matter.

| If someone doesn't deserve to live, for example a serial killer, why should we keep him in jail for life? It's our tax dollars paying to give him food and shelter every day. Unless he's working I suppose, but I don't think they let high-security criminals work...
My problem with the death penalty is this: Who are we to decide who deserves the death penalty and who doesn't? We can never know all sides of the story. We could never get inside their head to see why they committed the crime, or why they went insane. Some people say that if they're really insane it's kinder just to kill them...in which case, wouldn't you want to keep them alive so they could suffer?
Or if they're not insane, and actually do feel guilt (though I doubt many criminals feel guilt) it would be better to keep them alive so they could suffer through the guilt day after day.
Basically, I'm happy it's not me that has to make the decision, because it's nearly impossible in my opinion to decide.

| I understand your view, streamsy. I am inclined to agree to a point. I think that you are right about never really knowing all sides of the story when it pertains to serial killers.
After thinking, I do see your view on letting them stay alive to suffer rather than be kind and kill.
I'm also glad that I don't have to be the judge over who lives or dies. I'd make a terrible judge because I'd get too emotionally involved.
