2008 Beijing Summer Olympics

The aweeeesome 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic games have just started and everyone is excited - who will prove themselves to be the best sportsmen and -women, which countries will win the most medals?

I was watching the Women;s Basketball last night @ 3am. Brazil vs. S. Korea.

It was cool

I'm a big fan of swimming and gymnastics myself xD and so far it's been great...

Urgh! I hate the olympics so boring but i might watch something like the netball, i always liked that sport for some reason xD

I watched the basketball game between China and USA, partly because I loved the Coke commercial with two of their players :D It was great xD

Anyway, this is where I can gloat a bit; Finland being such a small country and sucking at... well, everything, I'm more than happy to inform that we actually have won something :D

Okay, who watched the opening? It was like some freaking new year! But then again, what else did you expect from the people with NO HUMAN RIGHTS, and those who invented gunpowder?

...that human rights thing was so randomly put there :D

The opening was... hilarious. Atleast the ending. A freaking flying Chinese!! I couldn't stop laughing with my friend :D And I half-expected the fire to die or something, and that would've been the cherry on top. But surprisingly, this was not a reprise of Athen's fire-incident xD

Okay, so I'm still of the opinion that China shouldn't have been allowed to arrange the Olympics... honestly...

I really want to watch the equestrian events (and my trainers told me to watch the high jump and hammer), but the stupid french are only showing the swimming, the fencing and the judo. ARG!

No, im not a sports fan at all. But I do like netball, I find it very entertaining.

Yea, i seen bits of the opening, it was funny. the flying chinese man out of order lol.

Hmm. I love sports, but I really don't see the point in having soccer as a part of the Summer Olympics. First of all, there's already the world cup in soccer, and the Olympics is pretty much the same deal all over again, right? Second of all, the Olympics have a stupid rule - atleast for the soccer players; they can't be over the age of 23. So basically, all we see is a bunch of nobody's running around, being all pro, since all the professional players are USUALLY over 23.

But I'm not complaining, no, no... I just think it's stupid :D

I like to watch the mens gymnastics.... mostly the parallel bars and the ring thingies. haha. Thats always fun.
I also like all the womens gymnastics : ] Go Shawn!!!!!!!
Swimming is good too... and volleyball. Oh, and I love the soccer : ]
So yeah... oh, and I aggree that China shouldn't have been allowed to host it. A couple Americans have allready been killed... its not right. : [

Netball is like basketball only you can't move while holding the ball. Only girls are allowed to play it but i ad good fun in primary scholl helping the girls to practice lol. Its really good fun and quite a athletic thing to do. Alot of moving and blocking ect.

She means they dont follow human rights, ofcourse everywhere has some human rights... some [places have very little others loads like america and Europe.

Erm... actually, they don't have THAT much, not even SOME, in my personal opinions. Dude, people that think differently are put in prison, or even killed! Besides that, there's also some websites that are banned, like the Amnesty's sites and such. Some people aren't even allowed to leave China, because they're "dangerous", meaning that they have opinions about stuff. This is true, because my friend was in China for a year, and she said she had a girl in her class whose family was watched 24/7 just because her parents had done something a while back.

Worst part, in my opinion, is that the people in China don't want a change. Well, the small part that does, are in prison, or six feet under. Anyway, they're so scared of their own government that they don't dare to make a change - imagine, the country with largest population, and the people is afraid of the government.

1) I live in Finland, so naturally I hate them :D
2) They already won the Eurovision, and in ice hockey world cup, and ALMOST in soccer too! They don't need another victory
3) They always have ugly presidents (Jeltsin, Putin, that-new-guy-who-acts-like-Putin's-puppet...)
4) Russia has Siberia - not a nice place, I bet

Germany is a very big place for horses, and they only won the Dressage, I think... They may have won the showjumping as well.. *curses french tv*

Oh, I played netball! In gym! I was quite good at it too. haha. I didn't know it was a real sport though... our gym teacher makes up half the games we play. : ]

We here in Finland see EVERYTHING :D We have... I THINK three or four channels, one of them is 24/7 Olympics xD

...but then again, I suppose it's because we suck at everything we do, so we have nothing better to do than watch other countries win :D

Stupid Americans, and since when was diving an olympic sport? Its not a sport though. Its just jumping.
If they have diving as a sport why not have the national best sack racers?

It is a sport, and it's not as easy as you would think.. first of all, it's like gymnastique or something, because you get style points, and you have to have a perfect control over your body. It's not 'just' jumping - it's a lot more than that!

In my opinion, soccer STILL shouldn't be a Olympic sport xD Same goes for ice hockey in the winter Olympics...

Nah, It shouldn't be, Isn't there enough things for footballs and all the rest going on? Ice hockey i don't know. You people have that as a national sport over there we don't. I guess it gives people in other countries like here a chance to compete in something they can't over here if you know what i mean.

Well, that's the nice way to put it, though :D Actually, I think there's an International Olympic Committee that meets up, and discuss where the Olympics should be held. Of course it's an important issue, the thing with the money and all... but then there's a lot more to consider, like politics. Back when WW1 and WW2 happened, the Olympics were cancelles, because... well, for obvious reasons; every country was involved in one way or another, and the countries couldn't really afford to host a 'silly little sports event' in the middle of a war! :D

...like when Finland was supposed to host the Olympics in 1940, but it was cancelled because of WW2, and we didn't get to host it until 1952.

So yes, money plays a big role

I'm actually more fond of the winter Olympics - more sports I like, like ice hockey, ski jumping, and snowboarding... all of which Finland have a chance in! :D

...and then there's of course skiing, but that's boring, really :D

Yea I guess so, and at lest in winter you don't mind watching the sports cus everything else thats on is like 'Frosty the snowman' and 'Santa Claus 2' xD

Exactly :D ...but on the other hand, I LOVE the Christmas shows :D I just don't like to watch television that much in the summer when it's hot and stuff.. I get an anxiety attack whenever I see those marathon runners, or something :D Ugh..

I asked my dad about how they pick the hosts for the Olympics; there's a committee, as I metioned, and then they look at the candidates, and go through their plans (yes, they actually have to come up with a plan of how they would organize, who will sponsor, which would be the host city etc etc..), and then they check if any of the countries have arranged the Olympics before, and how it all went, can the country afford to host the Olympics, and if the host city can actually handle the mass tourism that will come along with the Olympics :D So yeah, there's a lot to do.
