| All was silent as she walked through the hallway headed for her dueling room. Her eyes were half-glazed over as she mumbled half-spells under her breath and matched effects with their causes in her head. Before long, June found herself standing in front of the large double doors that led to her room where she was duel Rigby. She closed her eyes for a long moment and took a couple of deep breaths. Her Ravenclaw friend was a fantastic duelist, and June knew it would be hard to win this one. Before the entered the room, June checked her things to make sure she hadn’t forgotten anything back in her room. As she touched each item, she crossed it out on her mental list: Emerald bracelet that would glow to warn of traps – check; necklace that would turn her invisible and vice versa with a tap – check; and last but definitely not least, her wand. As June thought of her last item, she reached into the pocket of her jacket and pulled out the long length of wood that had been her constant companion since she’d started at Hogwarts.
Now sure that everything was in order, June put a hand on the doorknob and turned it. Just as she was about to open it, she froze and mentally berated herself. Rigby could already be there! There might be a trap! Be careful! Relaxing, June leaned over and pressed an ear to the door, trying to hear if Rigby was already inside. It was as quiet inside as it was in the hallway, but that didn’t provide definite proof. June moved her bracelet to the doorknob and held it to the keyhole. It didn’t glow and looked like a normal emerald bracelet. The small stones merely shined in the light, but didn’t give off their magical glow that would have shown up if something bad was waiting for her on the other side of the door. Mostly satisfied with her inspection, June raised her wand so it was at the ready and slowly opened the door.
Not even realizing it, June held her breath until the door was all the way open and she stepped carefully through. She closed it behind her and scanned the room. The walls were the familiar hard stone of the dueling rooms and it was brightly lit. All she could see was empty space. June waved her wand and murmured, “Homenum revelio.” This was a useful spell that could be used in many situations like this one, and June relaxed when no human-shaped figures materialized. Since Rigby wasn’t there yet, June had time to set the scene she had in mind. Turning quickly to the door, June flicked her wand and said, “Colloportus.” It wouldn’t stop Rigby, but hopefully it would slow her down. June followed that spell with a muttered “Muffliato,” and relaxed even more under the certainty that now her spells would be known only to herself, unless Rigby deciphered her wand movements.
June directly faced the wall in front of her and pointed her wand, saying, “Speculum (mirror; Latin).” This spell created a large mirror that appeared in the center of the wall. She repeated the spell for each of the other three walls until she could see a reflection of herself everywhere she turned, even if it was only out of her peripheral vision. These mirrors would not only hopefully confuse Rigby, though June had to be careful not to be distracted herself, but they would also reflect back any low-grade spell that hit them, though more powerful ones would shatter them. June would have to be careful of broken glass if a mirror shattered later on. Continuing her casting, June walked to each mirror, though it took a while with such a large room, and tapped each one, Disillusioning them.
Then, she walked to each of the four corners of the room and pointed her wand at the ground where the walls and floor met. “Griser jasmine (intoxicating jasmine; French),” she said at each of the four corners. This spell caused vines of jasmine to sink down roots and grow high up to the ceiling. Their exaggerated growth continued as the vines criss-crossed across the walls, tangling around each other, branching off to form many more shoots than the original four, and covering the walls and most of the ceiling with green foliage. Once settled, the vines began to sprout light purple buds that quickly opened to reveal small white flowers. They were numerous and the walls and ceiling became a patchwork of grey stone, green vines, and white petals. Though the plants covered the mirrors on the walls, the mirrors would still work if hit. However, when the jasmine was defeated since June didn’t think Rigby wouldn’t notice it, the mirrors would be underneath, waiting.
Just as June began to admire the beauty of the flowers, she remembered the point of the spell. “Aer ebullio (air bubble; Latin),” she quickly said without taking a breath and pointing her wand at her head. The Bubblehead charm worked to perfection and formed a fishbowl around her head, giving her fresh, untainted air to breath. The jasmine blooms June had created didn’t just hang around and look pretty. Their scent was intoxicating and after only a few moments would make their victims feel drowsy and confused, eventually putting them into a deep sleep, if undetected and unguarded against.
Moving on to defending herself, June circled herself with her wand and said, “Polline abssorbire (pollen absorb; Italian).” This spell conjured a thick cloud of pollen that surrounded her, though for the sake of the spell’s practicality, June was able to see and cast through the cloud. The light yellow pollen could absorb any direct spells that weren’t too powerful. It did so by clumping around where the spell would hit, absorbing the impact, and then spreading out once more. The energy the pollen absorbed was used to make it and its defense powers even stronger.
Satisfied with her efforts for now, June turned to look at the door. She backed away until she was almost in a corner of the room to wait for Rigby. She brought her wand up; her shield couldn’t be depended upon for everything of course, and began to wait patiently for the fight to begin. | |
