| (Thank you to Mandragora for the lesson idea. 10 points have been awarded, and you are still able to do the class)
For this class, you will need to do a small amount of research into the origins of magic and the timeline through to present day.
Create a timeline covering at least 10 magical moments through history, (you may include the Harry Potter verse, and actual reality). With each moment in the timeline, include why you believe it is an important moment of magical history as well as an illustration/picture of some sort. (Please try to post pictures as links)
Add a small 100-200 word conclusion covering how you believe that magic has evolved over the years.
Possible housepoints: 40
Remember to cite all your sources and no copying/pasting.
Have fun!

| c. 1135 BCE – First appearance of Merlin. Merlin was the greatest wizard in the history of the Magical world. He was a great Charms expert and created the Order of Merlin awards that we have today. He wanted to help the Muggles and made rules against magic on Muggles. http://www.hp-lexicon.org/images/wizcards/ea/001Merlin.gifc. 1000 AD – Founding of Hogwarts. Hogwarts is the only known place in Britain where all Wizarding children go to learn magic for their future lives. It educates all of the magical community http://www.snitchseeker.com/gallery/data/media/3/Hogwarts-Castle.jpg1227 – Ignatia Wildsmith is born. She invented Floo Powder which is the preferred mode of transport for families with underage children and for long distances. What would our lives be like without Floo Powder?! http://www.hp-lexicon.org/images/film/cs/floo-cs.jpg1326 – Nicholas Flamel is born. He made further advances in alchemy than ever before when he invented the Philosopher’s Stone that could give the Elixir of life and turn any metal into gold: something people have dreamed about for centuries. http://www.thequidditchpitch.net/images/stone.jpg1447 – Felix Summerbee is born. He invented the Cheering Charm so that any witch or wizard with depression can be cured. It is a fun charm with medicinal purposes although he himself was slightly deranged from overuse of his charm. http://www.hp-lexicon.org/images/wizcards/wom/summerbee05-cut.gif1492 – Bowman Wright is born. He invented the Golden Snitch so that the Seekers would still have something to seek while the Golden Snidget was banned from play. http://www.kapingamarangi.be/kevinclement/kevinclement/Gebruiktefotos/snitch.jpg1560 – Mungo Bonham is born. He founded St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. Before, those who were magically injured had to search all over for a Healer, but now they would all be in one place! http://hospital.mi-rpg.com/images/pageheader-hospital.gif1692 – International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy goes into effect. This helps the magical community stay hidden from Muggles and have their own lives in their own community. Representatives from all major intelligent creatures decided it. http://www.livejournal.com/userpic/6553439/12034501844 – Abus Dumbledore is born. He is the greatest wizard alive (I don’t believe he is dead). He defeated Grindelwald and was amazing at Transfiguration. He really changed or bettered the way Hogwarts was run and made it one of the safest places in Britain. http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/1630000/images/_1630515_dumbledore.jpg1926 and 1980 – These are the dates when Voldemort and Harry were born. They are the two in the prophecy who will determine whether the Wizarding world will be terrified or peaceful. http://web.ncf.ca/ee722/hp/media/gallery/movies/4/2.jpgIn conclusion, I think that magic has developed slowly but very consistently throughout the years since Merlin’s first appearance. We can see that different charms, transfiguration spells, hexes, jinxes, modes of transport, places and law have all come to be and how they affect the Wizarding world. Quidditch also has a history of its own and has developed from a primitive sport to an International competitive game. There have been many rises of the Dark side in history but so far, they have been quashed, apart from the last one with Harry and Voldemort on opposite sides. When the good side wins, then there wouldn’t be another Dark revolution for at least another century of so. Sources: http://www.legends.dm.net/kingarthur/merlin.htmlHP Lexicon | |
