| Godric Gryffindor was one of the famous founders of the great Hogwarts, the magical school for witchcraft and wizardry. The name Godric comes from the ancient Anglo Saxon language with means “he who rules well” or “he who rules with God”. However, the word Gryffindor could come from the word "Gryffon d'or" which means the golden griffin in French. The griffin is an ancient creature that has the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. The image of a griffin symbolizes great courage. This is the characteristic that is in each and every Gryffindor student. Yet the symbol for the Gryffindor house is a golden lion on a scarlet background. Not much is known about this great leader, yet parts of his history have been told through the Sorting Hat’s song at the start of every Welcome Feast at the Hogwarts castle every year. Godric Gryffindor was born and raised on the wild “moors”. This suggests that he was raised in Scotland or northern England, where moors are most common. He was one of the four founders of the Hogwarts School. Yet each member had a disagreement on who should get accepted into their school. Godric Gryffindor believed that anyone who showed any magical ability should be accepted. However, he valued bravery and courage above all other qualities in a person. A few articles of his possession still remained at Hogwarts. The idea of giving the Sorting Hat brains to choose which student would belong to which house was Godric Gryffindor’s idea. Therefore his hat, as well as his sword remained at Hogwarts. A few famous students in history have come from the Gryffindor house. For example, the late Prof. Dumbledore, the former Headmaster, as well as Prof. McGonagall, the recent Headmistress, were both from Gryffindor. Other members include the entire Weasley family, as well as the famous Harry Potter.
