Sword of Truth Series

Terry Goodkind is a genius.

So far as fantasy goes, Wizard's First Rule was near to perfect, and clearly a benchmark for other authors. (Drawing parallels is all to easy in the world of fantasy, but it's easy to see why when you read something as inspiring as Wizard's First Rule)

As a fan of the show based on the Sword of Truth series (Legend of the Seeker) I was glad to see that the book was so strong on its own, and that it really did make a good base for the TV series to build on. There were of course a few things I was sad to see were missed in the show: Richard's time with the Mord'Sith Denna had a lot more significance in the book, and was downplayed quite a bit in the TV show. And Darken Rahl was way scarier in the book. Chase was more impressive. These sorts of things.

But despite these things: love it.

Now to get my hands on Stone of Tears :D

Finally some WFR discussion. XD

When you read it.

Okay, so I'm only a few chapters in but just some comments as of now:

-Zedd is already Richard's friend! Not a weird person who only talks to his chickens! Hahah, I kinda like that more than the TV show

-So far it kinda seems like Kahlan was a lot tougher in the show (then again I haven't seen too much of her yet and maybe it's not always like this) and I think I like that better than her being super scared....it's sad

-I was so sad when Shar had to die....at least she didn't get shot like in the show. I cried then. Hahaha

-Ermmm...Michael tried to rape Kahlan. I was like 'WHOA. MICHAEL. BACK OFF.' Not cool, Michael. Not. Cool.

But I looooooooooove it! It's awesome!

Yeah Kahlan is not kick-ass like in the show at all. All she ever has is a knife, and she never uses it. There's a modern stereotype for women: they like 'em to be kick-ass. Seriously, if you think about it, most female heroins can hold their own. So the TV Kahlan can fight.

BUT if you think about it, she doesn't really need to know how to fight 'cause she's a Confessor. The thinking behind it is that she just unleashes her power on whoever is attacking her & threat averted. So Michael wouldn't have done much to her at all.

I'm actually a bit disappointed she's not as awesome as the TV Kahlan...I really liked that about her...but you're right, she really doesn't need to know how to fight with all of her powers.

And you were right about Darken Rahl being a lot crueler in the book. That whole thing with cutting their guts out while they're alive?? -shuddershudder-

I like how he licks his fingertips. I love creepy bad dude idiosyncracies. :D

Totally different Kahlan, isn't it? They super had to remodel her for TV. I don't mind so much, it makes the book <3 love in a different way from the show.

Yeah, the really redid Kahlan's entire character but you're right, it does make the book awesome in a way that's different from the show so still awesome to read! :D

Ah I want to read Stone of Tears, but I have to finish this other book first D:

I really like this whole thing with the Mud People...too bad they didn't put any of that in the show...

Mm it wasn't too bad. But I felt it dragged on for a while...

It seemed to me that it took a ridiculously long amount of time for plot devices to become relevant.

Mmm, that's true as well. I'm not done with it yet so I don't know how much longer it goes on for....xD

Um um it's after they've gotten the 3rd Box of Orden, and Richard gets split from the group.

Hmm..okay, not quite there yet then but nearing it. Woot!

EDIT::Oooo, I just got there now! And I love how in response to Denna trying to get him to say, "Thank you, Mistress Denna, for teaching me." Richard says, "Die, b*tch."

He's got attitude! YAYAYAY RICHARD! This sort of made my day. I love him.

Brace yourself, it's really quite brutal this bit. Really, REALLY brutal.

But I love Denna's character. <3

Whoa. I finished it. It was awesome. Definitley a lot different than the show but in a good way that made it so I still enjoyed it cause it was different.

I looooooved Scarlet. She was so cool.

And all of the Denna scenes were super creepy but she's such a complicated character that I still liked her. Hahahah

Kahlan in the Blood Rage was reallyyyyy scary though. And right before she went into the blood rage when all the men were being all gross to her I was super super super freaked out. So not cool. Poor Kahlan.

Richard and Kahlan get to be together a lot sooner than in the TV show though which is good.

WHAT AN AWESOME BOOK. But now I'm gonna be on withdrawal cause I haven't ordered Stone of Tears yet. EGAD! xD

Mm I knew you wouldn't like that *cough* - scene with Kahlan and the soldiers. But it's all plot device!

I know the Denna bits were creepy, maybe (I didn't find them creepy) but I think that Terry Goodkind has an awesome affinity for writing baddies. I usually prefer the baddies over the good guy. I loved Denna, she was complex and well written and fit in well with Richard.

And I loved how Darken Rahl had little idiosyncrasies. The licking his fingers thing? So much fun!

I feel very protective over Kahlan. Cause she's all Richard's. RARRRRR. (;

And I guess the Denna scenes weren't really "creepy", just kinda sad to see Richard getting all broken. Denna is such a complex character (like you were saying) that it made her interesting. Like how she knew training him would end her death but she still did it, and just her semi-compassion for him.

Yesss. I loved that Darken Rahl always licked his fingers. xD

I liked the different leather colours. I thought that was cool. I just saw the episode in Legend where Denna comes back (silly people changing the story) and she had white leather on - I really liked the designs on the neck piece/corset.

Well you're in for a shock in Stone of Tears ><

Oh no. A shock! Egasp! I had a lot of shocks in WFR...so different from the show but I'm glad it was.

Omg yesterday's Seeker was good! It was the first book-plot-related episode, and I super liked it. Though now there's going to be a 2 week break 'cause of the Dehli olympics =(

And lol, Kahlan's random, unexplained costume change!

I think it was supposed to be related to the fact that she and Richard had to part at that point (really liked that kiss, it was so sweet!), and they won't see each other for a while - new Seeker, new duds, perhaps.

Of course the one downer was Denna's death: wtf, not well done at all.

Yessss. That strange costume change! Hahahah, it was so random. They're so adorable. I was like 'NOOOOO! NEW SEEKER AND THEY'RE GONNNA BE APARTTTT!"

Oh so sad.

Yeah, Denna's death wasn't as good as it was in the book. Disappointing.

I know! They downplayed her awesome character... It was sacrilege!

Yeah, they way downplayed it. It was less epic as her real death. how sad for her.

Gosh... no one yelled. It was just...

she fell, and Zedd couldn't say anything, 'cause they didn't know she was having second thoughts.

I want to cry at the injustice of it.

I know. How tragic.

And speaking of tragic, my mom won't let me order the second book becasue my "birthday's coming up". It's in two months. I don't think I'm gonna make it.
