Hallow Drabble Challenge

Halloween is one of my favorite days, not because I'm a young person out getting candy from my neighbors. No, but because it takes me back to the days where I got to go with my own children to trick-or-treat and dress them up into whatever they wanted to be. They're all grown up now, with children of their own to take trick-or-treating. So, I stay home and hand out candy; secretly, I love that just as much. After all, what could be better than seeing a child's face light up from your simple action of handing them some chocolates?

With every step I took, my weight squeaked it's betrayal against the old wooden floorboards. My breathe, ragged and uneven, was in no comparison to the deafening beating of my heart. I slowly made my way to the closet door turning it slowly, as to not give him yet another hint of where I was hiding. My body tensed as the old rusted hinges screamed out my location into the darkness surrounding me. I slid inside and buried myself beneath the depths of torn clothing, hoping to escape from the terror that had forced itself upon my Halloween.

Gregory loved Halloween; it was the one night of the year that people didn’t scream when they saw him. Going from door to door, trailing just far enough behind a group of children to look like he was a part of it, he walked up the steps of the next house. “Trick or treat!” they all yelled together, and held out their bags to receive their candy. “What an adorable monster you are!” the lady exclaimed as she smiled warmly at Gregory. He smiled back, thinking “she wouldn’t think I was so cute, if she knew this wasn’t a costume.”

The girls walked out into the crisp autumn air, dressed in all black; they crept into the bushes outside their house, crouching low where they couldn’t be seen. As the first group of trick or treaters approached, they waited for the doorbell to ring before creeping up behind them and grabbed them from behind. Laughing, they watched the boys run away screaming. As they got back into place to prepare for the next group, they all leapt in fright when they were grabbed from behind. Turning around, they realized the trickers had become the tricked as the boys laughed hysterically.
