| I didnt know which section of the book forum to put this so if its wrong im sorry I found this on another site http://www.cosforums.com and i thought it was very interesting and something that has got me thinking. - Quote :
- Why didn't the Potters' trust Remus Lupin with the secret of the Fidelius charm?
Why did they think Remus was the spy? Any clues? Siruis thought that Lupin was the spy, so I assume that the Potters' did also. There must have been some reason to distrust him but what could it be? It wouldnt be to do with his furry problem (lol him being a werewolf) because we know that the marauders were all ok with it, so what is it? - Quote :
- The Fact :Dumbledore says someone close to the Potters is leaking information.
We assume that the reason for Sirius's and the Potters suspicions come from the means of crossing out the least likely people.
Sirius Black: James's best friend. We read in the books that James would trust Sirius with his life. So, Sirius was not considered to be the mole.
Peter Pettigrew : Everyone thought how in the world would no talent, weak willed Peter be in the Dark Lord's service?.. Thus, Peter has been scratched from the 'sneak' list.
That leaves one possible candidate; Remus Lupin . What did Remus do to lose the trust of Sirius and the Potters'? We know that Remus does not flinch or is even disturbed when the name Voldermort is thrown in a conversation . But when is invited to ask anything about Voldermort, he becomes very wary. - Quote :
- Quote:
" You know, I'm surprised at you. I thought the first thing you'd do when you got here would be to start asking questions about Voldermort ."
"A frisson had gone around the table at the mention of Voldermort's name. Lupin, who had been about to take a sip of wine, lowered his goblet slowly, looking wary." There does seem to be a hidden secret with lupin and it seems that it is to do with voldemort but again, i cant think of anything - Quote :
- I also think that Sirius knows about that secret.
Right after Molly reminded Sirius of Dumbledore's request about not telling him more than he needs to know, jk descibes lupin's behavior, and we can compare his with others'. Quote: "Ron, Hermione, Fred and George's heads turned from Sirius to Mrs. Weasley as though following a tennis rally. Ginny was kneeling amid a pile of abandoned buttercorks, watching the conversation with her mouth slightly open. "Lupin's eyes were fixed on Sirius" OOTP, American Edition page 88. (Is Lupin affraid of what Sirius is about to potentially divulge to his best friends' son ? hmmm..) Interesting again... What do you think because i am racking my brains trying to think what it could be

| I actually think that it is to do with Remus being a werewolf. Werewolves are notorious for being dark creatures - just look at Greyback, and it's possible that Voldie was trying to get in contact with all the werewolves during the first war, trying to persuade them over to his side with false promises of a better life.
I have a feeling it is Sirius that planted the seed of doubt that Remus was a traitor - we know that Sirius was the one who played the prank on Snape in their sixth year - almost causing Remus to become a murderer. Now, if I were Remus I would be very angry indeed that my supposed friend would do that to me.
Perhaps they fell out for a while over this? Perhaps that incident put a barrier between their friendship, that they couldn't fully trust each other. If Sirius could be so reckless as to not think of the outcome for his friend, he could be capable of thinking him a spy. Of course, this is all speculation.
Another thought is that perhaps Remus was in communication with Voldemort (not through his own want, of course) - as I said earlier, Voldie could have been trying to recruit the werewolves, and Remus may have been at the receiving end of a letter, or a meeting. Perhaps Sirius found out (for I'm still convinced Sirius thought it of Remus, not sure why lol), and that was enough for him to think Remus was a traitor.
Hmm...*reads back over what she just wrote*...did any of that actually make any sort of sense??

| I can see the remus being in contact with voldemort or rather his inner circle because he is in HBP but they did supposidly have snape for that.
I also cant see it being just about his werewolf side because they were all ok about it. They became animagus to help him. They knew he wasnt a murderer or someone who would betray them because they never betrayed him.
Also out of the marauders, it was peter who they never trusted. Peter was the weak link, so why didnt they suspect him? why lupin?

Yes they did trust him, but remember Sirius was brought up in a Dark Wizard household - and if as I said Voldemort was trying to recruit all the werewolves, there may have been that niggling doubt that remus would be tempted by the offer of freedom from the prejudices of the wizarding world. I'm not saying that remus ever returned the offer, or contacted Voldemort, just that he may have been contacted, and that might have been enough for some people to doubt him. I don't think remus ever had the role that snape did.

| As far as I remember it was only Sirius who suspected Remus was the spy. It never said that Lily and James suspected him.
My own guess is that they chose Peter because he would seem least obvious. I think that James's arrogance (and Sirius' for that matter) made them choose the lesser wizard who noone (including themself) would suspect...in this way, hoping that their 'true friends' would be safe. but this doesnt help with the answer to why remus was suspected as a spy.
Sirius always had a temper and perhaps grew resentful enough of Remus to later convince James he wouldn't do as a secret-keeper. We have seen that Sirius was a bit high strung emotionally, and it wouldn't surprise me if he would hold a grudge for some time. Perhaps too, Sirius might've felt that Remus' furry condition made him a candidate for blackmail and so would be a weak secret keeper.
It may have been that Remus himself gave his friends reasons to distrust him. Perhaps being a werewolf had taken its toll on his self esteem. Having so much of the world that you live in distrust and look down on you would sertainly become discouraging and very depressing. It may have been that due to other people's distrust and mistreatment that he began to feel that he was unworthy of his friends. Possibly he withdrew from them spending less and less time with them and causing them to become suspicious. Also the Order knew that they had a spy and it may have been that because he had withdrawn from them that they began to mistrust him.
