TUTORIAL: The Photo Within

The Photo Within

In this tutorial we’re going to be using the ‘photo within’ effect, to create this image:



What we need:

This picture of Rose

1. Open the picture to Paint Shop Pro.

2. Add a new raster layer (Layers >> New Raster Layer). Create a rectangular selection on the main object of the image (Rose), and floodfill the rectangle with solid white colour.



3. Click the deformation tool . This will create a selection around the rectangle. You will then be able to rotate the rectangle to your liking, thus:



4. Click the selection tool and press Ctrl + D to deselect the current selection. Then, press Ctrl + A, and click your mouse anywhere on the image. This will make a floating marquee appear around the white rectangle.

5. Save this selection to the Alpha Channel for later use (Selections >> Save to Alpha Channel). Name the saved selection as ‘photo border’.

6. Contract the selection by six pixels (Selections >> Modify >> Contract). Then, hit the Delete key, which will reveal the main object of the photo.



7. Load your saved selection (Selections >> Load From Alpha Channel). Choose the ‘photo border’ selection we saved earlier. Invert the selection (Selections >> Invert).



8. Make the background layer the active layer by pressing Ctrl + 1. Colorize the background image (Colors >> Colorize). Set the Hue to 17 and the Saturation to 53.



9. Blur the background image (Effects >> Blur >> Blur). Invert the image again (Selections >> Invert), and Sharpen the selection (Effects >> Sharpen >> Sharpen).

10. Press Ctrl + D to deselect the image, then merge all the layers (Layers >> Merge >> Merge All). Save your image, and you’re done! Of course, you can then go on to add text and brushes to your liking. This is a really effective trick which looks great on graphics.

Okay, I didn't follow your tutorial's exact instructions, because I'm using a different program. But the general idea is the same, and I used this tutorial to create this picture. What do you think? (Besides for the picture being a bit blurry.)

Here is mine! I chose a different picture to start with, but I think it turned out fine!

Here is mine... it isnt exzactly the same because I used The Gimp instead, and I lost the layer thingy somehow... but it is kinda cool anyway....

I have no idea why its a rectangle. It should be a square seeing as i had it on there.
