| Through Ilyria's ideas in the chapter discussions part of this forum, I did a little research into the significance of spiders
why you ask?
Remember back to the second chapter of the philosophers stone. The dursleys ave an abnormally clean house, so why were the spiders there? is there any significance?
At first I thought no, but then I reached out and came up with this:
The English word spider comes from the old English Spithra meaning spinner.
As we all know, Snapes dwelling is called Spinner's end...
now bare with me!
Using this translation, Spinners end translates back to spiders end
Spiders end shows death - the end to all. Does this fortell the end to Snape in the final book?
Link this with other symbolic things with spiders. They symbolise secretivness, a thriving to live and also hard work. Could this put altogether show the real snape - the snape who is on dumbledore's side who is going to die a good person and redeemed?

| ok as you know i will continue to debate your snape is good theory! He is evil and a death eater and here is how i can link it with the spider theory
I think it is a great theory. And taking the translation to mean spinner and associating with spinners end and therefore snape - great! Though this is where my thoughts differ.
spinners end = spiders end = death
ok but what about death meaning or symbolising death eaters. Spider females are well known for killing their prey. This to me shows snape, a deatheater (spider shown through translation) eventually killing and proving he is evil!

| Good theory and one side of it I didnt look at, though you are forgeting one little thing. As you said - it is the female spiders that kill. Snape is male. Could this show perhaps that someone who is female associated with snape will end up killing him? | |

| A very interesting theory though im not sure whether to look into it or pass it off as reaching (lol sorry headmistress!)
It is true, though, that JK writes things with hidden meanings therefore it could be possible....now i really am starting to believe it possible

| I think Snape will reddem himself by sacrificing himself for Harry so that nakes since to me. And the femal spider becasue Bellatrix is supposed to kill Harry to redeem herself for the Dark Lord and she will kill him. Interesting huh? | |

| nah Bellatrix wouldn't kill voldemort I think she would rather kill her family or herself even. That very interesting theory elfie hmmmm Well I think it might show snape getting killed or that the spiders are a symbol of death or something and it could show that Harry dies *faints* or it could just be becuase it is a cupboard under the stairs and they like to be spidery. | |

| No I meant that she would kill Harry. which we know now is not true.. but idk what I was thinking then. I think we fans have a tendency to look too far into these things. | |

He he. Nagini--the dumb snake--was female. What are the odds? This was actually quite fascinating to ponder. Oh, and by the way, Snape was a good(ish) guy!! Ha ha.
