Drabble Challenge 1

The challenge here is simple: write a drabble using the prompt given. A drabble is a short, self-contained fiction, which should ideally be exactly 100 words long.

For an example of some drabbles, see my fic here .

So, to the challenge:

Prompt: A canon character's birthday
Length: Exactly 100 words, or as close as possible (10 words more or less)
Characters: Any
Genre: Any

Points:

1st place: 100 housepoints
2nd place: 80 housepoints
3rd place: 60 housepoints
Everyone who enters: 30 housepoints

Hermione Granger headed down to the kitchen of Number Twelve Grimmauld Place, on September 19th. It was her 17th birthday, she knew it wasn’t going to be the same as other birthdays. She’d spend it searching for Horcruxes.

She looked around confused, looking toward the clock she saw it was 8 a.m., usually breakfast was taking place about now. “Hello?”

She checked the basement after having no success, after all who knew maybe everyone had simply lost their minds. Walking down the stairs she flipped on a light.

“Surprise!” came the yells of everyone she’d been working with for the past few months. Maybe things were better then she thought.

Here's my attempt... I hope it doesn't shock you all with it's horribleness! lol XD

She awoke to the smells of breakfast. Hmmm... Lily Evans opened her eyes and smiled getting out of bed. Lily walked down the stairs to the kitchen and grinned when she saw that the table was set with her favorite foods. Around the table, her mom, dad, and sister Petunia, waited with expectant looks. "Happy Birthday!" they shouted and Lily was enveloped in a group hug. Suddenly, everyone became silent when an owl flew into the room.

"What is an owl doing here?" said Petunia.

Lily shrugged, but reached out a hand to take the letter that the owl held out to her. She read it, and gasped, pushing it towards her parents. "You have been accepted to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry..." her mother read aloud.

Lily's life would never be the same again.

I tried to make it 100 words, I really did, but if I cut anymore out, it would sound horrible... But I went from 77 words over to 48... That's progress, right?

The doorbell rang insistently, interrupting Lily’s dreams. Humming happily to herself, she ambled across the sun-warmed floorboards. She knew that her parents had gone out early that morning, and she had an idea why.

But when she opened the door, she recognized Officer Williams, who often patrolled the neighborhood. They were friends.

“Miss Evans…”

She just stared at him, trying to quell a rising dread. He let out a long breath, his expression closed.

“Your parents…I’m afraid they’ve been in a terrible accident,” he said finally.

“It…it’s my birthday today.” She stumbled over the words, her mind blank.

He met her eyes sadly. "Happy birthday then, lovie."

(Blah I hate writing short stuff. I had to cut over 150 words. And though I know a few slang words for policemen, I wasn't sure if I would use them correctly so I decided to stick with 'officer.')

This was hard lol. I decided to write one of Draco Malfoy's 17th birthday. Hope you enjoy it.

A cool breeze blew causing his hair to blow into his eyes. He sat on the gravestone waiting.

“Draco dear…”Called his mother. It was time…

Draco walked through the center of the group and to the front where he then kneeled and lifted his sleeve, leaving his left forearm bare.

“I am at your service my Lord.” He spoke.

The Dark Lord then took his wand; touched it to the bare skin, and the dark mark began to form. He then dismissed Draco and Draco walked back to his mother.

“Happy birthday Draco.” His mother spoke in a hushed voice.

I wanted to do a Snape one before anyone else got the same idea!

Snapes Best Memory

Snape returned to his barren room, drained from another day of blocking his mind and intentions from Lord Voldemort. He went immediately to his pensieve and began searching through it. Today of all days he needed that one special memory. Finding the right one, Snape laid back on worn-out mattress, allowing himself to fall back into a memory exactly 20 years old today. The day a beautiful red-headed witch with startling green eyes had handed him his first and only birthday card. He closed his eyes, lingering on the memory of Lily's sweet smile as she handed over the homemade card.

“HAPPY A.F. DAY TO YOU, HAPPY A.F. DAY TO YOU, HAPPY A.F. DAY DEAR—”

“—FRED—”

“—GEORGE—”

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOOOUU-HOOO!!!”

“Gred, you just stole my thing to you.”

“Forge, YOU just stole MY thing to you!”

The Weasley twins sat up in their beds, watching themselves glare at the other. Their bedroom door cracked open.

“Hap—”

But Molly never got that far. A bucketful of sand had just tipped onto her head. She stood quite still, spluttering, spitting the grains out.

“You two will be the death of me.”

“Happy April Fool’s Day, Mum!!!”


A/N - Am I the only one who doesn't find these things hard...? The only thing I had to put on - because it was 99 words - was 'Mum'... XD

Poor poor Kreacher XD hehe I got bored

“Filthy traitorous children not fit to wipe my mistress’s shoes.” Kreacher muttered to himself, his wrinkled brown eyes suddenly filled with moisture at the thought of his lovely mistress as he threw himself to the ground. “Oh my beloved mistress! The shame poor Kreacher has to endure in your noble absence!”

“Kreacher does not wish to live any longer!” He cried out as footsteps approached him. His dramatic sobs gurgled as Kreacher tried to strangle himself

Ron glanced at Hermione with a shrug. “Mione, I say we should grant him his birthday wish.” He said with an innocent smile.

Hermionie cocked her head, studying a bird beyond the window pane, it was drawing ever closer. Her giant bird book was open and every now and then Hermionie would take her eyes of the bird in the sky and read some more. Finally the growing figure disappeared, Hermionie sighed. Turning away from the window and heading for her door she hear a sort of scraping sound on glass. Running back to the window and throwing it open the owl held out it's leg to her, puzzled she removed the evelope attached to it. The letter began...

Happy Birthday Hermionie Granger,

You've been accepted to Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry...

I'm almost postive that it's between 100 and 110 but after the fifth time of editing I'm still too lazy to count it again

Ginny sat there unwrapping her presants this was the worst birthday ever. Her father,Bill, Percy, Hagrid and many other people she knew had already died and it was only the start of the term. As tears rolled down her face she noticed that Harry had not sent her a presant was it possible that he had forgotten her brithday? Sighing she got up and walked down into the common room and there standing in the middle of the crowd was Harry.
"Hey gin" he said walking over to her and wrapping her in his arms "Ive missed you."
99 XD please note i don't have a clue when Ginnys birthday is.

Luna walked down the stairs and looked around her living room. There were many decorations all over the place and her dad was covered in some streamers and was trying to rip them off.

“What happened were we attacked by the Iocus bovis (latin for joker cow)” asked Luna.

“No Luna, we took the proper steps to make sure they don’t get into our house, don’t you remember. We hung a muggle’s bull horns on the front door.” says her father “Don’t you realize it’s your birthday.”

“Oh, yea I remember.” replied Luna as she started to open her presents.

Unrequited Love

Severus Snape was pacing. He never paced. But today, he was pacing. Today was Lily's birthday, and there was a war going on inside him. It was between his head, and his heart. His head telling him that Lily would never love him, his heart reminding him that she was the only thing he had ever truly loved. Turning the bottle of their newest potion he had put in a lovely colored glass bottle in his hand, Severus tried to make a decision. Entering the great hall, Snape handed Lily the bottle and said, "I believe this is yours."

Frowning at the silent house Petunia stalked in the room behind here sister

That freaky sister of hers said she wanted to show her something. What Petunia really wanted is some peace and quiet away from her. But her parents keep saying 'Oh be nice to Lily, Petunia, she just started a new school'

Suddenly they stopped by the living room door, shaking Petunia out of her thoughts. Lily threw open the door and grinned at her surprised sister

SUPRISE!

Petunia allowed herself to smile, after all birthdays only come once a year, even though it was your freaky sister who organized the parties.

~A Birthday Alone~


Harry traced the intricately carved wall panels as he sidled down the stairs, the hallway echoing his quiet footsteps. He looked up to the ceiling, his mood melancholy; nothing likely to change it.

He proceeded down the stairs, step by step. Quietly entering the kitchen, he sighed dolefully and sat by himself at the large table, missing the presence of anyone indefinitely.

Grimmauld place had been empty for such a long time, dust encasing everything that had not been touched recently.

On the stroke of midnight the clock rang, “Happy birthday Harry,” he said to himself sadly.

Wow! These are getting so much harder to mark as you are all so tallented. There can only be one winner, though, so without further ado I present the winners and the housepoints
