| (Spells in Italian)
Streams walked lightly down the hall, her dragonskin boots softly cushioning her feet. She was dressed in gray robes, her hair gathered back in a ponytail. I wonder if anyone's here yet, she mused, stopping in front of the door that led to the dueling room. It was a smooth wooden door, with no keyhole.
Fingering the wand that had been given to her, Streams sighed over the fact that she didn't have her own wand yet. Her magic would be so much more reliable with her own wand! Still, this was a pretty good one. Time to see if it would work when Streams needed it most. "Riveli la magia," (Reveal Magic) she said firmly, pointing her wand at the door. The blue sparks that shot out of her wand remained blue, and Streams knew there was no enchantment or spell on the door.
"Excellent," she murmured happily. "If my dueling partner hasn't arrived yet, then it is my lucky day indeed...I have my vials and canister," she patted her pockets, "and I'm ready to go!"
Still, not taking any chances in case the door was physically booby trapped, Streams twirled her wand and jabbed it at the door. "Aperto!" (Open) The door creaked open slowly and Streams grinned when there was no other noise, no strange flashes of light, nothing out of the ordinary at all. "Fantastic!"
Jauntily, she pranced into the room, swirling and coming to a direct stop in middle of the room. First, so that I'm not taken by surprise, I think locking the door is in order, she decided. "Serratura!" (Lock) she said aloud, jabbing her wand in the direction of the door. The door promptly slammed shut, locking magically. "Ouch...alright, that was a bit over enthusiastic," she grumbled, glancing down at her wand. "No need to prove yourself to me, okay? I know you'll do a fantastic job." She ran one finger along the wand, stroking it, and then began circling the room.
It was much more cheerful than dueling rooms usually were. The floor was worn parquet and there was an exquisite round rug in the left center of the room. A beam of sunlight shone down from a window high in the wall. "Very nice," Streams decided, glancing around and weighing her options.
"Protegga i miei occhi," (shade my eyes) she said, pointing the wand at her face, and instantly her vision darkened as if she was wearing sunglasses. Then she turned three times on the spot, eyes closed as she chanted:
"Sun, I know you at times resent When we middling men Meddle with your greatness I therefore ask and do not command Increase your light by as much as you can!"
Gold and green sparks shot out of her wand and Streams stood absolutely still with her eyes closed. The sparks swirled around her still body, faster and faster until they formed a ring of light, and then the ring rose into the air and shot towards the sunbeam peeking through the window. Gradually at first, it grew in light until the room was one big mirror of bouncing light reflecting off light, dazzling and intense. Anyone walking into the room would be struck still for a good few minutes until they figured out how to guard themselves against the onslaught of light.
"Now...there must be something interesting to do with this rug," Streams pondered, and shoved it aside. "Effetto della terra della palude," (marsh land effect) she decided, drawing a circle on the floor with her wand. This spell was complicated, but well worth it. The wood shimmered blue for a moment, then went back to looking regular, though it now had the effects of quicksand, and anyone who stepped into it would immediately be stuck. Streams smiled and pulled the rug to the center of the room.
Now, if anyone thought they were clever, and thought the rug might be jinxed, they would step off to the side and be caught in quicksand-like patch of floor! Just in case, Streams decided to leave magical residue on the rug so that if anyone tested it for magic, it would show up positive. "Pulito," (clean) she murmured, and a few dirty spots on the rug disappeared. "Ah well, good enough! Now, let's see, let's see..."
A long red curtain was drawn along the western wall. Now whatever is that there for?" Streams wondered and ambled over.
"Spostilo da parte," (move it aside) she muttered, waving her wand quickly over the curtains. They drew apart smoothly, not jerking apart like Streams had expected. "Good work!" she told her wand. "That's the kind of magic I like to do!" A single yellow spark flew out of the end of the wand and Streams chuckled. Merlin, this was one communicative wand.
A painting stretched along the wall, and Streams grinned. In the painting, three old ladies were gathered for tea. "What are you doing, girl?" one of the ladies demanded, frowning and waving a crumpet. "We're having a PRIVATE discussion here!"
"Sorry, sorry," Streams told her. "I'm just getting ready for a duel. You might all want to leave, since it's bound to get a bit noisy and messy in here."
"Ohh, no no," another lady piped up. "We want to watch, Ida, don't we?"
"Oh alright," the first lady grumbled.
"We'll cheer you on!" the third added, in between sips of tea.
"Ah, I've got an idea," Streams said. "I'm gonna close the curtain now, but I'll leave it open just a bit, right here in the middle. When my opponent comes in and wanders near the curtain, I'll make it fly open and you can all yell simultaneously, eh? Whaddaya say, give her a good scare?"
"Hum." Ida frowned.
"Oh oh! Can we put on masks?" the third lady asked, actually putting down her teacup.
"Sure." Streams chuckled. "Knock yourselves out.
"NO! I didn't mean literally," she groaned when she saw the lady about to smash her head into the table. "Just, ya know. Do your worst! Fine," (close) she added, drawing the curtains almost completely shut.
"Now, I need one more good offensive spell...oh, I know!"
"Pavimento sdrucciolevole," (slippery floor) said Streams carefully, making sure not to slur the spell as she began walking backwards in a straight path from the door to the center of the room, where the rug lay. Now the next occupant would walk in and slip ungracefully right to the center of the room, stopping short just a couple feet from the rug, and hopefully would fall right into Streams' elaborate trap...with a small smile on her face, picturing her partner sliding down the parquet; Streams sat along the eastern wall, drawing her knees up and wrapping her arms around them. She could hardly wait. | |
