| We all know in the Goblet of Fire Neville gives Harry some Gillyweed. This discussion is going to be based on what Gillyweed was actually made of. There have been a few statements about what it could have been made from, but I want you guys to use your imagination and try to create the source of were Gillyweed comes from. Also I would like for you guys to try and image were you think its located, and if its possible for this plant to actually exist in todays day and age?
So chat about it amongst each other and try to describe in detail everything listed above. You have a maximum of 70 points per student and the house with the most participation will earn an extra 10 points.
Also you don't need to state your sources cause you guys should be using your brains and working together. XD Good Luck!!

| Gillyweed is located in the west meditreanian sea. It is a twin to the seaweed and kelp but do not be fooled the three do not look the same. Gillyweed is slimie and it looks like small rats's tails. Gillyweed has one popular use and that is to breath under water. The user must chew the context till he or she feels gills and has webbed hands and feet. These effects will last only one hour, after that the gillyweed wards off and it is usuless till the user chews more. It tastes rubbery, all most like chewing shoe leather and has a nasty after taste. This weed was first discovered by Elladora Ketteridge. Gillyweed is not to be used in potions. It can be found in rual areas around the south west meditrianian today. | |

| Well that just about sums everything up...lol
Well if it is a twin to the seaweed and kelp it must be made out of the same thing that they are. I think that it is closer to seaweed but what would give it the ability to make people be able to breath underwater? Maybe someone had cusred seaweed once and then planted that in the sea or something and after that it had just multiplied. That would be my guess

| In my opinion, gillyweed started out orginally as seaweed but then was turned into what we now know as gillyweed by wizards who wanted to be able to breathe underwater.
I was wondering why gillyweed couldn't be used in potions.

| I agree that it was seaweed and wizards cursed it so they could breathe under water but if you invented somthing to make you breathe underwater wouldnt you keep it or sell it so you could profit for your hard work (cuz it probably wasnt invented overnight) instead of letting it multiply? Also what would happen if Japanese muggles mistook it for seaweed and used it too make sushi??? | |

| hmmm... they could... but when harry first takes the gillyweed and he is above water he cant breathe until he sticks his head in the lake. So maybe there are all these dead jappanese muggles with gills??? | |

| I think that gillyweed (if it exists) would be found in either a pond or small lake; a place with little to no moving water. And just like it sounds it is some sort of a weed that grows in the shallows where it is easy to gather when needed. It is going to be a dark, murky green in color with a slimy texture with its overall effect being like really wet spinach. | |

| Gillyweed I believe exists in the bottom of small lakes and pons and is a kind of good fungi which is basically a moldy form of seaweed which- when chewed for a short period of time- makes the chewer gain gills and webbed hands and feet to enable the chewer to breathe and swim under water for one hour.
And although I do believe that it is still exists today, the most recent sighting of it was 3 years ago at Hogwarts school of Witch craft and Wizardry.
I also believe that Gillyweed is invisible to muggles, and if chewed by them, will choke them to death.

| I believe most about gillyweed has been discussed by the people above me: it grows in lakes/seas, is similar to seaweed and kelp, and probably began differing from it when its composition was changed by wizards.
As to why gillyweed can't be used in potions, this is probably due to its origins. If it was tampered with so much by wizards, then maybe the parts of it that were changed became unstable, and wouldn't be able to work in any type of potion. After all, what more use could there be for gillyweed than what it does? You don't need a potion to be able to breathe underwater, you only have to chew the gillyweed. The only way to improve upon that would be to increase the time you can stay underwater for a longer period of time, and for that we have the Bubble-Head Charm.
Alice wondered why people didnt just keep gillyweed and sell it instead of letting it multiply. Well, maybe people do sell it-after all, Snape had to get it from somewhere. But, letting it multiply wouldn't be so bad, because if it lives at the bottom of a lake/sea, it would take quite a lot of work to get to it, wouldn't it? So maybe the average wizard would rather buy it (I cant imagine it's in great demand, despite its usefulness) than go diving for it themselves.
Alice also speculated as to what would happen to muggles if they ate it-maybe the muggle consumption of gillyweed, thinking that it is regular seaweed, could be held responsible for mysterious suffocations that make up the cold cases of the muggle world.
Herby asked if it could exist in today's world...I absolutely think it could. After all, if regular seaweed and kelp exists just fine, why not gillyweed? There seems to be no difference between them, from what we have speculated to, other than the magical properties the gillyweed posesses
