| Flying Instruction Discussion: Foul!
Welcome to the first discussion of the new term! This will be the first of many discussions within this class, you know how it works. Discuss various points and opinions of the topic. The more involved you are in the discussion, the more points you’ll rack up within the class. No double posting allowed but you can post more than once within this thread and I expect you all to be involved! While a debate may spark within this discussion, please remember to keep it friendly. Ever since the beginning of Quidditch there have been many changes. To date Quidditch has evolved into what we know of it today. Below you will find an article taken from the Daily Prophet – read, think and respond! Our Chasers Aren't Cheating! That was the stunned reaction of Quidditch fans across Britain last night when the so-called "Stooging Penalty" was announced by the Department of Magical Games and Sports last night. "Instances of stooging have been on the increase," said a harassed-looking Departmental representative last night. "We feel that this new rule will eliminate the severe Keeper injuries we have been seeing only too often. From now on, one Chaser will attempt to beat the Keeper, as opposed to three Chasers beating the Keeper up. Everything will be much cleaner and fairer." At this point the Departmental representative was forced to retreat as the angry crowd started to bombard him with Quaffles. Wizards from the Department of Magical Law Enforcement arrived to disperse the crowd, who were threatening to stooge the Minister of Magic himself. One freckled-faced six-year-old left the hall in tears. "I loved stooging," he sobbed to the Daily Prophet. "Me and me dad like watching them Keepers flattened. I don't want to go to Quidditch no more." Daily Prophet, 22 June 1884 A few key points to cover within your posts• Make sure to state your opinion – what is your opinion on stooging? • What is “Stooging?” • Should it go back to the way it was? • Did the Ministry have valid reasons for making the change? • Was it even necessary? • Reaction to the article • Etc Make sure to cover majority of the points I have listed. If you find something that I can’t or bring a new idea to light you will receive an extra 5 points on the discussion. The best within the class will also receive the extra 5 points.
Possible points total: 50
Be sure to include *all* sources. Missing sources will have 5 points deducted from their assignment automatically.

| Stooging is a a very dirty ploy that was once used quite often in past quidditch matches. What would usually happen during stooging was the three chasers would approach the goal posts with the quaffle. While two of the chasers proceeded to attack the opposing team's keeper, the third chaser would use the opportunity of un guarded goalposts to score.
The fact that stooging is now a foul makes perfect sense. The ploy is an underhanded move that people who truly appreciate the game of Quidditch would never even think of attempting. Quidditch should be one based on the skill of the players and not on injuring other players so badly that they are not able to play to their full potential.
As for people who grew up watching stooging, while it is unfortunate that something that was apart of their Quidditch watching lives is now gone, that doesn't mean that stooging isn't wrong. It's completely barbaric, we are, after all, in the 20th century.
In conclusion, the Ministry of Magic's decision to declare stooging a foul is completely correct.http://www.hp-lexicon.org/quidditch/quidditch-encyc.html | |

| What is your opinion on stooging? I believe that there shouldn't be an actual rule about stooging, as there should be other players on the Keeper's team attempting to intercept the group of Chasers. What is “Stooging?” Stooging: a tactic once allowed where two of the Chasers would ram the Keeper aside so the third Chaser could score a goal. This was outlawed in 1884 and Stooging is now a foul. http://library.thinkquest.org/TQ0013289/quidditch.html#S Should it go back to the way it was? I personally do not understand why it was outlawed in the first place. Did the Ministry have valid reasons for making the change? I believe they did, safety is always an issue. Was it even necessary? I do not believe so. Reaction to the article I understand that the safety of players is a concern. However, those who play understand that injury is always a possibility, and accept those risks when they step onto the field. While the attempt to regulate risk is commendable, there comes a point at which the rules interfere with the enjoyment of the sport, for both the player and the spectator. | |

| what is your opinion on stooging? I do not think that Stooging should not be allowed. The reasons why we have Keepers is to block the goal posts so that the ball can not get in. If the chasers force the Keeper out of the way then who is there to block the ball? What is “Stooging?” Stooging is when the chaser qith the quaffle has the ball and goes to make a score that the other two chasers enter the goaling area and force the keeper to stay away from the goal posts Should it go back to the way it was? No. I believe that with this new rule that the keeper would have a chance to use his goaling skills. If he was forced out of the way then how is he suppose to use his skills to block the ball Did the Ministry have valid reasons for making the change? I believe that they did because during a game of qudditch the players can get really into the game and because of this they can get a bit mean. If they go Stooging they might end up hurting the keeper so that he can no longer play throughout the rest of the game Was it even necessary? I believe that it was because there would no longer be any players hruting other players just so that they can make a score without using the Bldugers. The game is highly dangerous already with two black balls flying around the field trying to knock the players off thier brooms Reaction to the article I am not surprised that they would ban it. It makes the game less more dangerous

| I personally think that stooging was right to be banned. Would you like to be the keeper on a team where three chasers came charging out you. I also think that it makes the game more intense as fewer goals will be scored. Stooging is where three Chasers came into the goal scoring area and two of them distract the keeper either by blocking anyway of escape or some other means therefore giving the third chaser a clean shot at the goals. I think it defiantly should not go back to the way it was. Quidditch is enough of a rough sport how it is without all the other injuries that may occur to the keeper if stooging was brought back. If the ministry did not have valid reasons how could they have banned it? Having seen many quidditch games themselves and the injuries that occurred to the keepers through the stooging technique I think the department of games would have sat down and thought long and hard about this. Although it may upset some quidditch fans having one of the tactics removed I think that it is best for the intensity of the game, the smooth running and safety of the keepers. My reaction to the article was good on the ministry. I felt sorry for the boy, for crying but what sort of six year old should like to watch a keeper get hurt? I personally think that if he were the keeper on that quidditch field then he would exclaim that it was a fowl if he got hurt. I understand that it might disappoint some people and teams as that might like that young boy having been one of there favourite techniques but as said before its better in the long run of the game.
